Just wondering how many companys out there are having problem with these new cargo nets. I would like to send out a reall bid thank you to the dump ass FAA inspector that is causing all these delays with this new net. Nice catch big guy, I would hate to have the load move 5 feet, maybe we should put a net over all the people so that they dont go to the JON.

Just been hearing that eveyone is having problems with these and causing alot of CLX and delays. If not I guess I am just really misinformed.

The hearsay I have received says that this was prompted by an incident in which turbulence slammed bags/cargo through the ceiling of the baggage compartment and damaged control linkages. I wasn't there and am therefore not qualified to opine regarding the validity of the new requirements.

I have, however, heard that the fed's have been lying in ambush at the arrival gate and that the PIC is being taken to task if the nets are not properly installed.

Isn't it funny though, you can always tell the feds at the gate. Real bad tie, worn out jacket purchased at JC Penny. In the south, cowboy boots and north, Wingtips with rubbers. Oh ya and the Belt Buckle that says "SKY COP".

Howdy, Pickle.

Good description.

However, the fed could be standing there with a marching band and a 10x20' lighted sign that says "I'm gonna be there when the baggage door opens." You still have to taxi into the ambush.

Personally, I am checking both nets before departure.

I the some bags did go thruogh the roof then maybe it is good that the nets are there, but there has to a better system than the spider web system that they have now. This system just seams to be another kneed jerk reaction to a problem, without to much thought. Duct tape would work just about as well as all them tangled up nets. If that crew got rocked around hard enough to put a bag through the roof , I am suprised the wings stayed on these tin cans.

Maybe we can just collect a few more coke cans and and stiffen things up alittle. We all know that if you pull back the interer of the ERJ all you see it the words COKE, DIET COKE, BUD, BUD LIGHT, MILLER, SPRITE, for all the recycled cans they used to make this thing.

What sucks about this whole thing is that as PIC you are ultimately responsible for the nets being secured. Unfortunately most of the time the cabin door is closed and everyone is strapped in while the ramp is still playing with the bags and nets. It isn't practical to leave the flight deck to personally inspect the cargo compartment prior to every flight. There has to be a method to ascertain that the cargo was secured properly. Of course if a ramp worker tells you it's secured and it isn't, you're still the one that will fry when the feds are waiting in ambush.

"What sucks about this whole thing is that as PIC you are ultimately responsible..." Yup

"...Unfortunately most of the time the cabin door is closed and everyone is strapped in while the ramp is still playing with the bags and nets..." Not anymore.

"...It isn't practical to leave the flight deck to personally inspect the cargo compartment prior to every flight..." It is now

"...There has to be a method to ascertain that the cargo was secured properly..." Until such time-CYA

As a ramper, i work mesa erjs and it is a royal pain in the a$$. You have no idea how complicated things just got with this net until you have to deal with it. The bad thing is that if the bags won't fit under the net it has to come off. Once all of the bags are secure under the net, there is still room for at least 25 more bags. Everyone is pissed about this. There have been countless delays. An easy, realatively fun job just became a nightmare. Embraer is working on a revision but isn't due out until march. If you are a flight crew member please be patient with the ramp guys. We are just as pissed as you are.

Not mad at the rampers, just frustrated with the whole thing. As are you.

Bottom line is that if the FAA finds it done wrong on arrival, it falls on the PIC. So conversely, please don't get mad at us when we want to look.

I don't know anything about this net or the EMB-145 so let me ask a dumb question.

How does this FAA dude know when it is "done right"?

I would imagine when they poke their pointed little head in the cargo bin and find the net laying in a heap near the back that it is not installed correctly. ;)
