What's the story with this thing? Supposed to be a 1400NM, 350KTAS, FL310, with all the seats full of actual human beings airplane. Seems too good to be true... where's the catch? Do the factory built ones have a Type Cert yet?

No, it is not true, they're just telling stories out of school.

There was a big deal about the first one customer built, the FAA said he didn't do it all. Now, they got past that. I understand plans are to make it certified, but you know how that goes. It's one step beyond a paper airplane, in that they are actually selling some, as experimental (ala AirCam, in another thread).
It is offered in a 4 place, customer built aircraft. They dropped the 6 place thing several months ago. I guess when, if, they certify it, it will be offered as a 6 place.

i like the name

Well, of course you do. Epic Lieutenant doesn't sound so cool, though, does it??

Found something in one of the rags today that said it is to be certified 1st Q of 2007 and is supposed to go for like $1.9M. Seems like a pretty amazing airplane if it lives up to their claims. Beats a TBM850 in just about everything, and it looks damn sexy doing it, too.

There is NO way that's an actual aircraft cockpit. Besides the lack of rudder pedals, you'll notice there's a window airconditioning unit down there. Those also look like strange controls for a turboprop, and look suspicously like those for a piston airplane.

Granted, there could be an overhead panel, but think of all the things that are in your cockpit that you don't see in this one...fuel selectors, lights, climate control, charts, a wet compass, and the list could go on and on.

It's kinda like the "Proud Bird" just outside of LAX. They look like a bunch of neat planes, but the reality is there's one two or three real ones there, the rest are just hunks of fiberglass.

The Epic was flown into OSH a couple of years ago, but is well beyond the means of most home builders, and certification would be years away (just ask the Eclipse folks).
