Does anyone know when this happened? (The links to the pictures didn't work, so I didn't add them)

Engine falls off a 33 year old B747Jumbo

CHICAGO (AP) _ A cargo plane bound for New York's Kennedy International Airport landed safely at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after losing an engine somewhere over Michigan.

The Kalitta Air jet took off from O'Hare International Airport in Chicago late Wednesday. It later reported mechanical problems with one of its engines, a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman in Chicago said. The Boeing 741-R was able to fly but was diverted as a safety precaution to Detroit, where it landed without incident, FAA officials said. No one was injured. After the landing, airline personnel discovered the engine was completely gone, FAA officials said.
Michigan authorities searched Thursday for the engine, which may have fall en into Lake Michigan, the FAA said. The FAA will investigate the incident, but the results of an investigation could take weeks, the FAA said.

Something very similar happened several years ago ('94/'95??) to an El-Al Cargo 747 in Amsterdam. Two engines fell off the pylons and the aircraft subsequently crashed in a heavily populated apartment high rise while dumping fuel and returning for landing at the Amsterdam Shiphol Airport. I think since then Boeing/NTSB/FAA came up with a mandatory AD.

It was summer of 04, I believe. They diverted into DTW... I remember taxiing by the plane and thinking to myself "something just doesnt look quite right.... OHHHH... 3 engines...."

The engine ended up in Lake Michigan. Kalitta found it, but wouldn't reveal its whereabouts. Maybe to keep the FAA away or keep salvagers from stealing it???

Engines are designed to come off is extreme situations. The Kalitta deal was something like a bad pylon repair done by Boeing.

I seem to recall as well that it didn't just drop off but flipped over the top of the wing as well. There were some pictures around on it.

Connie lost one of a straight pipe diesel 8 a few years back. I seem to recall that a Red Tail 72 lost one once also

Evergreen dropped one in the parking lot of the Cherry Hill mall in NJ back in the late 80's early 90's.

Evergreen 747 dropped and engine in the early/mid 90's after takeoff from PANC. Severe Turbs caused the pylon failure.:erm:

What airline was it (I'd guess back in the 60's) that had a 707 with a wing fire and I believe it dropped the #4 engine. Someone actually caught a picture of the airplane flying over a freeeway with the flames and black smoke entrail. They landed safely but lost a big section of wing

Evergreen never dropped one in NJ but they did have #2 come off A/C N473EV in ANC in the early 90's while flying for JAL.

Your assuming that the Kalitta 747 actually left with all 4 engines attached.

Is that all the insult you have to banter?

Are you forgetting Kalitta developed a reputation for a reason?

Or is it you just dont understand tounge-n-cheek humor?

737-200s

I believe Piedmont and USAir (separately) each dropped a motor in the mid/late 80s.

Single engine 737-200 time ...literally.
