Get your CFI and soon you will be getting paid to fly while taking your classes. It will be busy, but it is fun. Without the 4 year degree, you have an uphill battle getting on with a major (this includes UPS, FEDEX, ect..) . You can have a good career with many regionals, especially if they base you where you want to live and you do not commute.
I think you should do it if you want to fly for a living, regardless of the pay you might or might not make. If you get to a regional (and you will) the pay will be enough for a nice lifestyle. Hopefully the work conditions will match that. And if you get to the majors then it is that much better.
It sounds like you made up your mind already. Just make sure your family is on board with you, it might be a rough ride for a while. Those first few jobs are where you get all of your crazy stories to tell everyone in the crew lounge.

At the airline that I am furloughed from now, we had a 52 year old in our indoc class. Sure he had less time to enjoy the ride, but he still made it.
