UPDATE 1-Emirates airline gets cold shoulder from Germany

Fri May 20, 913am EDT

* Emirates pushing to get right to land at Berlin airport

* German transport ministry won't hold talks with Emirates

* Emirates: Hopeful it will get access to Berlin, Stuttgart

(Adds transport ministry spokesman, Emirates comments)

FRANKFURT, May 20 (Reuters) - Germany's transport ministry said it was not holding talks with Dubai-based Emirates [EMIRA.UL] airline over the rights it is seeking to land in Berlin.

A spokesman for the ministry confirmed a report in German daily Handelsblatt said representatives of the ministry met Emirates managers on Thursday but did not agree to hold official talks on giving the carrier the slots it wanted in the German capital.

Emirates has been aggressively expanding its route network, provoking fears that Gulf-based superjumbos would draw traffic from European carriers' hubs. It has been pushing to get landing rights in Berlin and Stuttgart, in addition to its existing German destinations Frankfurt, Duesseldorf, Munich and Hamburg.

German flagship carrier Lufthansa has reportedly asked the government to deny Emirates landing slots at Berlin's new airport.

"Since 2004, Emirates has been seeking access to Berlin and Stuttgart because of market demand and the strong business, trade and government support of those cities and regions," a spokesperson for Emirates said on Friday.

The carrier said it was hopeful its request would receive German government support, adding that it was in touch with the relevant authorities.

Last year, the United Arab Emirates failed to gain greater access for Emirates and Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways in Canada, leading to tension between the two countries.

Handelsblatt cited industry sources as saying Emirates plans to fly to Munich with an A380 superjumbo from 2012 to increase passenger capacity in and out of Germany.

Many more countries will follow the Germans.....its called fair competition,

Emirates is not a fair competition. Delta paid 3 billion on fuel fees and Emirates would have paid 60 percent less for the same fuel usage..NOT FAIR GAME, so there you have Germany and Canada lead the investigation. US should be next

Your just jealous. How long ago did you get turned down at EK before you took a pay cut to go to delta.

Provide proof on the fuel fee theory...I am interested to see.

Good old US for me brother. No China, India, ASIA or the desert.....no way

EU protectionism didn't start with EK's application for these routes...

I can understand why countries are nervous. There is only so much of a bilateral you can have with Dubai. Most European countries could maybe fly one or two flights a day there, and that is about the amount of people that want to fly there from those countries or connections from others. But Emirates flies passengers from all over through Dubai, and then onto those European countries, taking away connection passengers from those in Europe. It's called protectionism, and it is legal. Dubai and the UAE don't like it, but they can't offer much else to those European countries or Canada. BA or LH may fill one or two widebodies per day, but Emirates wants 10 a day.

BTW, I talked to a passenger in the ATL airport a couple days ago that just came in from Dubai (DXB) and he said he filled up his rental car with gas for about $5. Sounds like gas is cheaper there. Maybe you think he was lying. I think there should be limits. France, Germany, and Canada are the first to do it, and if Emirates takes away more passengers from other Countries national airlines, expect more. Where will they then put those 90 extra A380s? All to Sudan? What about Zimbabwe?

General,
You make very good points about why this "protectionism" is happening and why most airlines are against EK's further expansion. Time will tell how successful the lobbyists are in stopping EK.
Tell me where he filled up cause I want some of that gasoline!! Gas is currently running at about $1.70-$1.80 a gallon here. Far below western prices but still not a tank for $5 dollars, unless he has an 11 litre tank.
