Embry-Riddle(MBA) anyone?

To anyone who has completed or gone through the program:

I just finished my BS in aviation degree at UVSC and I am looking to start the MBA program at ERAUs distance education location this May.

I would love to hear any comments about Embry-Riddle and their Master of Business Administration program.

What was your background degree before the MBA? Was it a difficult transition to the business degree? Was it a good experience at ERAU? How long did you take to complete the degree? Anything that might help prepare me for the transition? How was each semesters work load?

In classroom is awesome. Online needs serious improvement.

General studies degree from UNO online, concentrations in aviation, management, and math.

I got my a$$ kicked. Two courses the first session online was too much. The last semester at UNO I had 26 credits from 4 different universities, 8 substantial research papers, and still made the Dean's List. At ERAU I was also trying to run a flight school and Sept 11th just sucked the time out. November 01 was the only month I spent over 5700 minutes on the cell phone trying to keep students, instructors, and airplanes going. By December it was too late and the term was over.

One course at a time was a good workload in addition to working full time.

Mixed feelings. The Riddle-Runaround™ was a major hassle to get financial aid or registered for courses online. The distance campus didn't have those problems and I got direct numbers instead of the student assistants. I did not like how they backdated their documents. I certainly did not like how they suddenly decided to suddenly stop issuing financial aid for summer sessions (May through August) in the distance programs. That's three sessions that are now unavailable for those not on military TA. I constantly found it hilarious to be awarded aid with large amounts from veteran's assistance and grants, yet not be eligible for either. I loved the three weekends version of the courses. One weekend a month for three months, plenty of time to prepare presentations and papers, and recover from doing so. Both the students and instructors were from the real world and in the middle of starting businesses, closing businesses, designing new and unique things for Skunkworks or

Not done yet.

>Anything that might help prepare me for the transition?
Were you planning to work at all? Start working on assignments the night they are assigned. I had a roommate at one college that completed her masters in one year. She would be out for three days, camped out in the college library, just to write one small paper. Get the software "FormatEase" if you are not already proficient in writting term papers in the APA format. Graduate professors can toss an entire paper if one comma is out.

Take one class at a time until you find out your workload level. These courses are nothing like UVSC's "complete in a day" courses.

It's not a certified program by whatever organization certifies graduate BA programs. You'll have to research it. I'll ask my wife about it, she used to work at ERAU as an assistant center director and said it was pointless.

I think my heart skipped a beat, with the thought about the degree not being accredited. That is a good reason to check out these schools before spending any time or money!

ERAU is a well known school I don't think they are in the business of churning out degrees that no one will recognize. But it makes you think.

CSU Northridge and UCLA are accredited by the Western Accrediting association. There's a dozen places charging schools for the blessing of "their" accreditation.
If the FAA doesn't recognize the ERAU degree, why are their top people and future top people earning the MBAA there?
How about Boeing, Lockheed, Airbus top people?
Pick and choose from any of the airlines....
And the military...
There was even an Andersen Counsulting employee in the Organizational Behavior Course.

And these companies were/are paying for these people to be in these courses.

Stanford, Harvard, Yale offer something more than a business degree. They offer networking opportunities. I think ERAU's MBAA, in the classroom, does the same thing, but the networking is with the movers and shakers in our industry.

Compared to the U of PHX and two or three of the other "online" biz degrees, Riddle is 1/3rd the cost at 199 - 300 per credit hour.

$300 per a credit hour, I sure hope thats the online version, because last time I check for Undergrad work it was $750 credit hour and it's going up by another 6%.

If you are at either main campus then its almost 800 a credit hour for graduate programs. The on line and extended campus programs are around 300 a credit hour and vary by location. A lot more people are enrollng now because of the current job situation. An additional degree certainly doesn't hurt (except the pocketbook).

This is the quote that I found at the ERAU website: Embry-Riddle is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), which is one of the seven National Accrediting Agencies. The MBA/A program at the Daytona Beach campus is nationally accredited through the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

the Daytona Beach Campus" is nationally accredited .... it doesn't say a thing about the distance learning or the extended campus MBA/A's. They are not the same thing. The on-campus (read Daytona Beach) has had a much tighter curriculum than the online/distance learning/extended campus versions.

Will the hiring manager you face some day know that? Maybe, maybe not. I'm betting probably not. Caveat emptor.

MBA Program

I am on my second (and third) class of the ERAU MBA distance learning program. Since I've only just started, it's hard to give good answers to your questions.

I'll try to help a bit with some questions.

My BA was in "Aeronautical Science" - not much business there. I was accepted into the MBA program, but I need to take "foundation courses" before I can take some of the graduate courses. There aren't a big deal - I only paid for the book - the class didn't cost anything (but it's no credits either). I took the "Marketing" course - basically, it's read the book and answer questions. I couldn't take any marketing courses until I finished it. Some areas that you had to have taken during your bachelor was economics, finance. Etc.

As someone pointed out, there isn't much of getting the run around - my emails to register or if I have a problem were always answered within the hour - and always very helpful.

The professors vary, but that was the case during my BS as well. The online degree IS different - no doubt - but I'm learning, and it will help me in the future.

Someone was saying the online program isn't accredited - not so. There is a quote from the ERAU Distance Learning website:

Embry-Riddle is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award degrees at the associate, bachelor's, and master's levels. This accreditation includes the Distance Learning Program.

Yes, Embry-Riddle is accredited by SACS to offer the master's degree. Therefore, yes, it is a legitimate master's "degree." Riddle is not a diploma mill. I think the question here is whether or not the MBA/A through the extended campus is recognized or accredited by any of the major business school organizations. Currently, the extended campus/online version is not. The Daytona Beach MBA/A program is recognized by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). www.acbsp.org That may or may not be important to you. In my own opinion , I happen to think that's pretty important.
