Anyone use an approved class 1 or 2 EFB? We're a part 91 company and would like implement this. I've found a few retailers who sell class 1 EFBs that will work on our laptops. They claim to be compliant with Advisory Circular 120-76A. However, I can't find out if an EFB replaces the required navigation charts. Is it legal to fly with an IFR with an approved EFB, but without any paper charts?

“Class 1 EFB systems may be used on the ground and during flight as a source of primary or supplemental information”. FAA does not distinguish between “paper” or “electronic” charts. Since ChartCase falls under the FAA Advisory AC 120-76A, ChartCase may be used for the required charts. AC120-76A defines Class 1 EFB as completely portable devices with no permanent connection to any aircraft system. Portable EFBs can be temporarily connected to an aircraft’s electrical power system and/or to a one-way only passive data bus output from an aircraft’s installed avionics system."

This is from the retailers website. The part about the FAA not distinguishing between paper or electronic sounds strange to me.

EFB Classes

I currently work on the chart data for the EFB. I'm under the impression that the Class 3 EFB still requires paper charts to be carried, but for the Class 1 I am not sure.
