Did a search, didn't find that answer. Hopefully I can be saved the flames.

What's MEC stand for? I've seen this abbrieviation quite often on the Major and Regional boards. Thanks!

Martian Environmental Commission.

I think it stands for Master Executive Council. I have no idea what that means and would appreciate an explanation too.

Are they the folks that go to bat for you or fold when negotiation time comes around?

Yes, in ALPA terms, MEC is the Master Executive Council, made up of a Chairman (Captain's rep), Vice Chairman (F/O's rep), and Secretary/Treasurer.

At least that's the way it works at my company.

I'm about to roll off the chair laughing, Whoever said that pilots are a bunch of cold, calculating, rigid, no-nonsense jerks with no sense of humor has never logged onto this board!

Hugh is correct, the MEC is the Master Executive Council of a unionized pilot group. It is made up of reps from the LEC's (Local Executive Councils) and is essentially in charge of the union. Some people also use the acronym to refer to the council Chairman, who is officially the MEC Chairman.

Basically, they control your life. In my opinion, working at a airline with a bad MEC is worse than working for bad management.

:D Now that's funny!

In the rest of the world, an MEC would be called a Local...as in "International Maglev Drivers, Local 201."
