Transcript:

Apparently the Bush administration didn't learn much from its Dubai Port fiasco. Incredibly, it appears the Bush administration is going ahead with a plan to give control of our airlines to foreign investors, despite the fact that the United States Congress has expressly disapproved that idea.

Bill Tucker has the report.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

BILL TUCKER, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Domestic control of our airlines appears to be coming to an end. That, despite overwhelming bipartisan opposition in Congress to a rule change that would give day-to-day operational control to foreign investors.

REP. FRANK LOBIONDO, (R) NEW JERSEY: Aviation is a very critical component of homeland security and of our economy. And I don't think we can afford to do anything which even brings into question that homeland security would not be under complete control of the United States and the United States interest.

TUCKER: Rumors of the imminent change prompted members of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure to remind the White House of their opposition in a letter, quote, "... Congress has taken a strong position that a major change to the current law regarding foreign ownership of U.S. airlines should be accomplished only by Congressional action, not unilaterally imposed by the Executive Branch. Making the rule final in the face of bipartisan Congressional opposition would be a very poor start to the 110th Congress..."

The administration says it not only has the right to make the rule change, Congress is making a big deal out of nothing. Yet back in February, the representative of the Department of Transportation conceded the obvious. JEFFREY SHANE, DEPT. OF TRANSPORTATION: They would be able to make the commercial decisions that define the shape of the product, the quality of the product, the routes that were flown.

TUCKER: As well as what planes to buy, where they're maintained.

REP. PETER DEFAZIO (D), OREGON: I mean, the national security implications losing control of the Civilian Reserve Air Force fleet, the massive job losses for American pilots, flight attendants and others associated with the airlines, and in all probability dramatic cutbacks in domestic service.

TUCKER: If DOT makes the change, DeFazio and Lobiondo say Congress will override it.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

TUCKER: Now, we repeatedly called the Transportation Department asking for comment, asking if a rule change will, in fact, be announced soon. The Department had no comment.

Lou, this is all being done as so often it is in the name of free trade. The United States, seeking to gain landing rights in Europe and in London. Amazingly, those European airlines already have landing rights here. We're not denying those right, we're just giving away the airlines to land in Europe.

DOBBS: Well, "we" is a big word. The Bush administration, with its manifest -- what does George Bush -- I mean, straightforward, this administration, do they understand this is an American government, a democracy, a representative government?

It is absolutely insufferable to tolerate this kind of arrogance. Thank goodness that the Congress is standing up. And thank goodness we're going to have some oversight and some checks and balances, we hope, in this new government.

Bill Tucker, thank you very much."

This is great, because NAFTA worked out soo good for America. Oh well, I guess age 65 might soon be the least of our worries.

Anyone who gets elected President these days will be a globalist. Not going so far as to get into the "new world order" conspiracy thing but they will pursue a global free trade, open border agenda.

This will undermine our soverignty and be a detriment to those who believe in the principles this country was founded on and who would like it to continue to be governed by those principles.

Those like Lou Dobbs, Neal Boortz and a handful of others are becoming 'voices in the wilderness'. TC

I'm going to open a big can of worms, but here goes.....

American has tried to merge with British Airways in the past and was unable. If this law goes through, they should be able to do it. Why is that bad? It seems like it would be good to work for British/American Airlines. Talk about opportunities for international flights.

Obviously, it would suck if someone like Richard Branson bought one of our legacy airlines and turned it into a massive, international discount airline with low pay and poor work rules. Just like all of you, I don't want Ryan Air to take over our country either. It just seems the days of U.S. workers making $100,000 a year welding at GM while people in India starve are almost over.

I read a book called "MegaTrends" that talked about the inevitability of all this. The nation-state was the primary unit of the industrial revolution. In an information society, the association with a particular nation-state is not nearly as important.

For example, in WWII we had to fight Germany, Italy and Japan. Today, our enemy is not associated with a nation-state, but rather with a set of ideals. Even in war, the nation-state has lost its importance. Exactly what country are the terrorists from?

Eventually, the U.S. will have to join economically with Canada and Mexico to compete with the EU and China. Its just a matter of economics. Eventually all national borders will be blurred to the point of unimportance.

Also, wanna know the best place to build a wall to keep illegal immigrants out? The Southern tip of Mexico.

P.S. No, I'm not a communist/socialist. With more and more international trade, the distiction between communist, socialist and capitalist is getting blurred too. We were ready to nuke the USSR for being communist, but now we are best buddies with Red China.

I just think this is going to happen whether the American worker likes it or not. It's inevitable.

Now for the differing opinions..........

Big Slick.. are you amking the assumption that in the globalization of airlines there will be jobs for americans?

No, I think it will probably suck for us. I just think we can't stop it.

Merging with British Airways might be OK for AA guys, but I think overall the QOL for pilots will decrease dramatically. I think lots of American workers, not just pilots, will be affected.

And yet there are still pilots who think Bush is our friend....Mind boggling. Thank god congress is in new hands. It is amazing how close we came to losing what's left of a decent career.

A friend of mine worked for British Airways (non-pilot) and achieved a senior position in the US. One year during a panel review in London he was asked what his goals were now that he had achieved the highest level for an American in the organization. He got early retirement eventually.

Trust me when I say working for foreign companies suck. They are run by people who by and large either hate or are jealous of Americans and do everything possible to keep you in your place as they see it.

They are only voices "in the wilderness" if you allow them to be.

Tell me about it. I am continually amazed of how so many pilots can be so neo-connish. It's utterly amazing.

"Best Buddies" with China? I guess everybody has forgotten about the P3 incident just before 911?

I saw a NWA guy with a US/VA flag pin on his lapel. No ALPA pin. We talked about the recent VA senate race and he proudly declared that his wife worked in the White House.....

He comes to work to try and make a living and she tries to stop him.....

He's pushing hard for it because him, his old man and his brothers are on the payroll of a bunch of secretive, scummy Gulf Arabs are going to need plenty of open investment options for the proceeds from $60-80 Bbl oil. The Bush family has zero interest in the Republican party or the welfare of the country.

That is where the final push is coming from. It's not coming from a pension saddled BA, Lufthansa or Air France.

Can anyone else here see what may come? A US President and the Courts ordering US airline pilots not to strike just because a few Arab dictators (UAE for example) refuse to negotiate?

Still Republican and PROUD of it.

Do we all have to be SO FAR LEFT or SO FAR RIGHT?!

Can we be pro pilot? Most of us are moderates but for some reason our culture forces us to decide and we allow ourselves to become polarized. Our identity is all about brands.

Dare we be issue orientated?

Your right. Statesman, American's who believe in the America that our ancestors built are becoming far and few. People are more concerned with the price of gas, what govt. hand outs they are eligible for, etc, etc. People have no idea how much they actually pay in taxes. All most Americans care about is having enough to make their payments each month.

Ingenuity, can do attitude, adapt and overcome, hard work for a better future for our children have all been replaced with disenfranchised groups all battling for govt power. There is not regard for a better tomorrow.

This country needs a revolution, and that was actually written into the constitution. One of the original framers, Jefferson anticipated future revolutions to keep govt in check and to keep it from running out of control. He said "Let future revolutions be a bloodless as possible, but as bloody as necessary" !!

But to speak of this, or to organize is now a federal crime. The govt that we the people created, has insulated itself from a revolution. It is called the anti sedition act !!! You will be jailed for talk or organizing a revolution.

Rome was destroyed when foreigners moved their and realized they could vote people into office who would give them things. HUM, where is that happening at today ?????????????

Mark

If the anti sedition act were enforced, 1/2 the congressional democrats and 99% of the main stream media would be incarcerated. Clearly this doesn't happen You are free to work thru peacable means to organize a political majority to enact your preferences into law, subject to the limitations the constitution places on government power. What you are not free to do is to attempt to enact your ideals through violence and coercion.

You can vilify Bush all you want, it doesn't matter. Globalization is coming whether you like it or not. Bush has not caused globalization and he has not caused the war on terror. We would have the same problems with a democrat in office.

In fact, it sounds very naive to me to think one party actually cares more about the average American than another. Sure, Hillary Clinton cares more about poor people than Bush. Whatever. They just say what they need to to get elected.

Here's another thing - no matter where you went to school or for how long, no one really knows how to run a country. America is running itself, not George Bush. He can do certain things to point the country in another direction, but he isn't really in charge. Nobody is. For example, no one really understands how the economy works.

Here is how every political system really works. The power elite of the country do everything to protect their interests. Doesn't matter if its communist, fascist, socialist or democratic.

The only difference between Bush and Kerry is the year they graduated from Yale. All they want to do is keep themselves, their families and their friends rich and empowered.

So the Bush White House tries to circumvent congress and change foreign control.... Control of Congress switches to the Dems and foreign control gets held back...

Sure its a game... but plays are being made.... For the last five years I am tired of being played...
