I'm 121 and haven't instructed in a couple of years (my licenses are current though) I've been approached by a friend who needs a bi-annual (his has expired). I'm rusty on the CFI regs but I see no way to legally do this, as neither of us can be the PIC in "class" (single engine). Is this correct?

An idea:

Why not ask your friend to pay for your currency in a single? Otherwise, why not get a checkout for yourself, just for the fun of it? Then find a couple more pilots who need a flight review, and use those fees to cover the exspense?

I am sure you already know this but you could not receive any compensation. I think this would include your friend paying for any of your expenses (i.e. paying for you to get current again).

How come?

Just as an aside, I don't think it matters if you actually get "paid" for the flying or not. 121 requires all Commercial flying to be included in your rest and duty requirements, ie 30 in 7, 1000 in any calender year. Most airlines won't let you do any other commercial flying, ie instructing or biennials, due to the fact that this would come out of "thier" 1000 hours.

do what bob hoover did and go and get instruction as a pre-solo student. then start spinning/looping the aircraft on your instructor. chuck yeager thought it was funny.
