A student asked me a question today which had me somewhat stumped:

If you have a type rating on your pilot certificate, can you give instruction in that aircraft? If not, is there such a thing as having a type rating put on to a CFI certificate?

I thought- as long as you are typed in the aircraft (that way can act as PIC) and have an MEI, you can give instruction in say, a 767. This sounds like the right explanation to me....can anyone confirm this?

Yes

Yes and no

My guess is this...

If you are a CFII-MEI, obviously you could instruct for both the type rating and instruction required for a certificate.

If you're not a CFII-MEI, then I believe you could still train someone for the type as long as they possess an appropriate certificate (such as an ATP), but you may not give instruction to someome looking to get a certificate.

At UAL we had plenty of PIs that didnt have a CFII-MEI, but they were typed in the specific aircraft they were teaching on. They could instruct for the type, but that doesn't mean they could instruct someone for a certificate that required a certain amount of flight instruction.

Clear as mud?

Take care,
Hvy

ATP instructing

I believe the reg says an ATP may gave instruction in airline service. That's the key to ATPs instructing without a CFI. Meaning, in my case, I hold an ATP and a Citation type but my CFI is long expired. Unless I got current again and by a miracle some airline hired me I cannot give flight instruction unless I get back my CFI.

Here it is....61.3...

3) A flight instructor certificate issued under this part is not necessary --

(i) Under paragraph (d)(2) of this section, if the training is given by the holder of a commercial pilot certificate with a lighter-than-air rating, provided the training is given in accordance with the privileges of the certificate in a lighter-than-air aircraft;

(ii) Under paragraph (d)(2) of this section, if the training is given by the holder of an airline transport pilot certificate with a rating appropriate to the aircraft in which the training is given, provided the training is given in accordance with the privileges of the certificate and conducted in accordance with an approved air carrier training program approved under part 121 or part 135 of this chapter;
