Are we truly ready for DRVSM? I have spent the last two days in a seminar put on by the FAA?
Some thoughts to think about as they put it.
1. Fuel savings allowing aircraft to fly at their maximum and most fuel efficient altitude.
2. Reduction of workload of controllers? Hmmm they say with 1 thousand foot seperation between 290-410 this will give the controllers many more options.
3. They say this will not saturate and airspace, but give them more available airspace. My question is we are not increasing the cement on the ground( available runways) so how many more aircraft are we going to add> Can you imagine the additional flight levels that will be available Jan 20 2005 and trying to sequence in to the Northeast. Wow what a concept, now we depart LAX and begin our descent and slowdown for flow control at the mississippi river.
4. Non compliant aircraft, now that brought up alot of questions?
5. Are we ready? You answer the question. Just something to think about?

Free Flight is the only system that will provide all of those benefits. RVSM is just an interim solution until they can work the bugs out of FF.

It's going to be interesting in the future sharing the airspace with micro-jets doing M 0.65, drones, and non-compliant planes! Might just nullify all of the advantages.

The FAA does say they'll be regularly checking N-numbers observed in RVSM flight levels against the registry.

Just another reason to buy new planes.
