Negative,

My AME is a DO. They can prescribe the same way a MD can.

Heck, my friends wife is a DVM, and she writes scripts all the time...by the way, did you know Walgreens stocks pet meds? And they're a heck of a lot cheaper than your local vet.

Nu

Okay, my bad. I meant MD or DO.

Okay, extra credit everyone: is it possible to be a DVM and also be an AME?

Anyone know if a half of an ambian will show up on a drug test I took 2 days prior? Do they screen for that kind of stuff? Not a current pilot but just did an interview. Thanks for the 411

Ambien is not one of the drugs tested for in FAA/DOT/Airline Employment screens. I am 100% positive! No doubt in my mind! If this was the only drug you took, you should not lose any sleep!

And you people call yourselves professionals

You gotta look up the drugs half life. Ambien has a half life of 2-3 hours. So after a couple of days, I'm willing to bet the average drug test will not find levels strong enough to deserve a Positive result. If they did one of those gas something or another tests that they use in autopsys and criminal investigations, you would be screwed.

I dunno how you act on Ambien, but my wife turns into a wide eyed psychopath. She can barely walk, let alone operate a vehicle of some sort. My advice, don't take stuff like that when you're a pilot.

If you have too, take Sonata.... Shorter half life, wears off faster, similar chemical structure to ambien.

For those who want something non prescription related, investigate Melatonin from your local tree hugger store. In small amounts, it works well.

(yes, I'm an insomniac)

Edge, I felt the same way as you until I started taking Lunesta. I was extremely wary of taking sleep meds in our profession until I realized how dangerous it was to fly on 4-5 hours of sleep per night. I tried Tylenol PM which helped me sleep but I would be drowsy the next day. My AME gave me samples of Lunesta which is the best thing I could have tried. I function so much better now than when I did before I used it. And no, I don't use it nightly, maybe once or twice a week.

As I attempt to type I am on an ambien....and a bottle of red. Greatest feeling. Goodnite

Also, I have it on pretty good authority that drug tests only screen for opiates, amphetamines, THC (marijuanna), and alcohol.
you are correct, have a friend who is on high blood pressure deds and has never failed one drug test.

"Livin on reds, vitamin c, and cocaine,
All a friend can say is aint it a shame?"

I suppose glue sniffing could be a drug of choice for regional FOs.

Well you have nothing to worry about.

An FAA drug screen tests for five substances: marijuana, cocaine, phencylidene (PCP), opiates, and amphetamines. Don't have one of those in your system? Don't worry. Yes, you can pass a drug test while under the influence of LSD or mushrooms. Most other drugs are under the opiate or amphetamine umbrella. By the way, most of those drugs are out of your system in 24-48 hours, except for the weed which can be 1-7 days depending on frequency of use and body mass. The really fat, really heavy smokers might need 3 weeks.

My understanding is that a light, one time use may be detected up to 7 days. More frequent usage such as smoking daily may be detected for up to 90 days. If you smoked a couple of times a week then at least 30 days will be required. Also, THC is stored in the fat cells so heavy exercising and crash dieting will be VERY BAD just prior to the test itself. Also, use the pee from midstream, not the start or end. This tends to be the cleanest. Don't ask me how I know this! ;)

It's odd the drug test doesn't look for Benzodiazepines which are fairly abused. Maybe more so than these opiates which are tested for. Benzo's are basically things like Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, Ativan, etc. Sedatives and anti-anxiety/panic agents in other words.

So are you saying your friend isn't telling the FAA he has high blood pressure?
Yes that is what I am saying, and if you think that he is the only one who does not say anything you must be dreaming.
