Yes it blows, and yes other pilots will be sharpening their knives, but any attempt towards a national seniority system will be blocked by mostly co-pilots unwilling to accept a longer wait for upgrade. Even with a steady and protected career, probably had to do with AA's infamous "B" scale. Probably had something to do with Clancy Sayens particular brand of Republican Unionism.
