Does DB still fly the line at ASA, or is he all management?

I was just wondering because I met him some time ago, and I thought he said that he flew too. Or atleast he did before he was vp.

I got hired at the same time that Drew came to ASA and to my knowledge, he's never flown the line at ASA. I've never seen him in an ASA aircraft; I believe he was checked out on the ATR before he came here. He still signs his company memos with "Captain Drew Bedson" which always makes me laugh since he's not a line pilot, doesn't have a seniority number, and as far as I know, stays as far from the airport as possible. I don't know what he's "Captain" of, but it's not an ASA aircraft.

If I am not mistaken, Drew Bedson did fly some of the ATR delivery flights for ASA and once had a pretty close call as a result of unexpected and unforecast headwinds on one of the Atlantic crossings. I also think he flew the ATR at Ransome ( Pan Am Exress ) and would hold a mid eighties date of hire with Delta if he had not gone into management. He knows the ATR and has even assisted with some incident investigation work.

Drew is pleasant in the few dealings I have had with him. Overall, ASA's management is very anti-pilot and I don't know if Mr. Bedson is responsible for that, or if he simply gets painted with the brush.

Overall, I can't figure why ASA always seems to be on a jihad with its employees. I heard a Captain on the radio refusing to accept a release with a airplane swap because he was fearful that the company would later accuse him of taking the wrong airplane. I don't know that I agree with his refusal to pen in a change on a release, but given the history of the subject at ASA, I can understand his concerns.

In three and a half years at ASA, I have never seen DB, except in a company video. I believe he and Skip did come to the airport once this past year, but I was not there that day.

ASA has some great flight crews to work with, an I enjoy flying here, but we have the worst management I have ever seen. I guess it is part of our corporate culture, left-over from the original owners of ASA. Some MBA student could use this place as a case study in how poor management can alienate it's employees.

The problem is most of the managment is left over Badit pilots with no higher education. Good guys to drink beer with but not run your company.

DB

I worked with Drew at Pan Am Express. He was always a top notch and well respected guy.

He held the positions of Cheif Pilot, DO, and CEO at one time. He also was a DE on the DASH 7.

Lets not be too quick to chastize a guy by name on a message board Gentleman!

You may have klnown Drew in the past, but this is the present, and people in power change. Don't lecture us!

Too funny! Drew goes outa his way to make things difficult for the ASA pilots. He directly controls Screw Schdg and encourages that department to make life as difficult as possible for the pilots. Our schedules are everything as they control our lives both on duty and off. Drew knows this, and pushes it to the extreme.

Drew was pretty cool when he first arrived here, but he never makes any appearances in the crew lounge anymore. Wonder why?

Deuce......
DB is a nice enough guy outside of the ASA community I'm sure. To be, and or remain a "top notch well respected guy" you have to level with your employees. You have to be willing to listen and give good unbiased feed back. You also have to stick your head out of the GO and see what is really happening with your airline.
I haven't seen him do this ever! On top of that I hear rumors of dislike between our Pres and VP of Flt ops.............

Undoubtedly.

This sounds like the same gripes that we had at ASA when George and John were running the show. I am on furlough right now from a major carrier, and sometimes I think to myself; maybe I should have stayed at good old ASA I would be very senior. But alas, I read stuff like this, and think what I am doing ain't so bad, and I have a number to go back to. Good luck guys, hope to see the ASA pilots on strike someday for real wages and more importantly work rules. Contract 1998 was a HUGE step in the right direction, but now your flying replacement DC-9-10's and should be getting paid properly. What has happened to this industry? If we call something a ERJ or a CRJ we can pay half rates? I guess that is the case. Go get'em ASA pilots.

Respectfully,

a former ASA guy

He was in DFW ops about 3-4 months ago and was more than happy to talk to me, a lowly FO, and answer all the questions I had for him. And he was in DFW ops today, talking to a bunch of pilots. Seems like a nice enough guy, and does know the industry and the company. That's not to say he doesn't encourage screw scheduling to do what they do best, but I haven't seen it.

WHAT?!?! What kind of crack are you smoking? I'd rather try to gain those things without striking, thank you.

Drew is a moron. He has little to no respect from the pilots and other supporting mgmt in the GO. He was brought in by Scott Young, former VP of Flight Ops, who has since been shown the door due to less then stellar performance.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some of these people leave the company in the next year due to the arrival of Grinstein at Mainline.

No, other way around, DB is VP Operations, over EVERYONE on that side. He's the boss...

You've got it backwards, Drew hired Scott. They use to work together at Ransom.

Whoever said these guys are nothing more than old bandit pilots trying to run the company are correct. They need to clean house, I have ZERO confidence in our management. God forbid DAL sells us and they acutally have to RUN the company on their own, instead of just jumping when Gerry says jump. Drew, Nelson and Chromer need to go.

Ted Striker-

What's wrong with Chromer? How did you lump him in with the likes of Nelson and Drew? He may not be great, but he is not that bad.
Drew is a moron.
Actually, Drew is not a moron. He just doesn't like pilots very much. In fact, Drew is actually quite good at his job. He's been able to pull the wool over SB's eyes for years now and the only one to take the fall was his right hand man SY. That sounds pretty smart to me.
