Just curious if anyone ever flew with this guy. I like him but he does have quite the speech impedament for public speaker. Any stories?

Thanks!

I don't know him. My only encounter with him was on a DEN-SEA flight last year. I didn't get a chance to chat with him though.

My father-in-law did fly with him in the Air Force. He mentioned that Nance was great fun to fly with, had a lot of great stories, and definitely knew how to tell a story.

Liked his book "Splash of Colors" .But got real tired of him showing up on ABC News as a paid spokesman anytime there was an airline crash. I mean the crash investigators weren't even on the scene yet and there he was with some pretty boy anchor pontificating about what went wrong. You think as a line pilot he would know better and wait for the investigators to finish their work, But no,not him. I found it real interesting that when his own airline lost an MD80 several years ago off the California coast, he wasn't anywhere to be found. Haven't seen, read of heard much of him since .

Word from the line was that he could not fly his way out of a wet paper bag...

Might be entirely true...but...

Anytime someone does something out of the "norm" they are subjected to extra scrutiny, envy, and jealousy. I agree with PHX on his "expert" role, but I can also imagine that guys who show up regularly on TV or are published authors could easily get the scorn of someone who's greatest accomplishment in life was walking around in an airline uniform.

I'd take any comments like those with a grain of salt...

Concur. He can turn a phrase, which puts him above 99% of us from the standpoint of Skill Sets.

I'm getting a whiff of jealousy from this thread.

If you had the the choice between 'Top Gun' flying skills and a million dollar book deal, which would you prefer?

Hmmm...let me wrassle with that one a bit.

My uncle flew with him a number of times. I guess it was quite an increased workload on the capt when he was in the right seat.

I'd rather have him on TV than Mary Schiavo....

Regardless of what you think of him, looking at his CV, he is certainly very qualified and has a pretty impressive list of things he has done with his life. Pilot, lawyer, author, professional speaker, etc.

Medusa's Child, Pandora's Clock, Headwind, and Saving Cascadia are among the great books he's done over the years. I've read just about all of them.

No jealousy at all,Mark. Just don't like line pilots telling the world why the airplane went down before the flames at the crash sight are extinguished. As a line pilot he should know better. But reviewing his CV and reading some of the posts from those who flew with him during the course of his career,I guess flying was more of a hobby for him than a profession.

Come on Albie. You know better than that.

Several occaasions that I know of personally and both were long before any book or movie deal......Why is it by the way that when we fly freight we do it in casual comfortable clothes and you guys walk around in an airline uniform.....OK, I just had to do that and now I will concede that I am no match for you and I will slink back to my hole

Wasn't he the guy who missed off the LDA in SIT and turned LEFT? !!!!
Maybe even the same guy who missed a taxi way at PDX in light snow and went 4 wheeling through the grass?
Could be just old check airman's tall tails, but I have never heard anyone say anything good about his flying skills.

No clue about his flying skills but I have met him twice and he is a very friendly, personable guy who is easy to talk to, knowledgeable about the industry and not at all arrogant/big headed as you might expect with someone who has been as successful as he.

If I could drop flying and start writing successful books, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I heard he went up the wrong inlet on wrg-psg and almost kissed the hills.... I also have never heard anyone ay anything good about his skills....
