There have been 8 contractual documents (plus one interim contract negotiations in 2002) that concerned the pilots of Southwest. The first was a set of “Work Rules” that were put into existence prior to the pilots forming their own collective bargaining unit. After SWAPA was recognized in 1978 the Association entered into its first contract on July 1, 1979.
Since that time there have been a total of 7 additional contracts. Contract length has varied from one year (#1 in 1978 to 1979) to the current contract of ten years (#7 in 1994). This was amended with an Interim Contract in 2002 that impacted pay mostly and some limited benefits. It was not a full section 6 negotiaitons.
Bargaining periods have varied from nine months to as much as a year and a half with an average of nine months.
Just for grins, this is the summary of the first (no contract, just work rules) negotiated agreement between the pilots & Southwest Airlines.
