I'd rather they start charging extra for carryons. Everyone fumbling around with those things takes up a LOT of time both loading and unloading. It should not take 30+ minutes to exit a 757.

Why not? I'm actually surprised some ultra-low LCC has not tried to crack the US marketplace. Have an ultra-low base fare and then charge for EVERYTHING else. Food, softdrinks/snacks, IFE, aisle/exit row seats, advance seat assignments, boarding priority, baggage, pillows & blankets, and everything else you can. Cram as many poor souls as you can into an A321 or 737-900. Do more advertising of products on board the aircraft; find as many ancillary revenue opportunities you can on board the aircraft.

I heard Ryanair has done way with stuff like seatback pouches and windowshades as well to cut down on costs too.

It sounds a bit loony but I'll bet there's a niche market below the level of service you get today from the LCCs currently out there.

Seems like there's a potential downfall to that. If the carrier wants to charge for checked bags, people will simply try to carry on too much stuff. The end result of that might well end up being delays as the ground and cabin crew have to deal with too many last-minute carry-ons that now have to go in the cargo area. And if the crews have to put the luggage in the hold at the last minute, wouldn't they end up doing that gratis, thereby making the threat of a $5 checked bag being nothing more than a costly headache at departure time?

Maybe they should simply make the lavs into pay toilets or stop printing those inflight magazines...

Or like Jay Leno said.....

"Plane is coming down and the flight attendants are giving O2 masks to the highest bidder."

"Do I here $50?"

"Anyone?"
