Boeing's 787 on Schedule, Demand Strong

New Boeing Airplanes Chief Says 787 Still on Schedule Despite Weight Issues

CHICAGO (AP) -- Boeing Co.'s 787 Dreamliner remains on schedule for its first test flight next summer and for delivery to airlines in 2008 despite the ongoing challenge to make it lighter, the new head of the company's commercial airplanes unit said Wednesday.

Scott Carson told an investment conference in New York that Boeing has 435 firm orders for the new jet from 35 customers along with another 21 nonbinding commitments. The continuing demand makes it "the very strongest product launch in the history of this industry," he maintained.

Boeing officials have said since earlier this fall that they need to trim the 787's weight significantly from parts scattered throughout the entire plane, in some cases switching from aluminum to titanium, in order to meet its promises for greater fuel efficiency.

Carson, the unit's sales chief until September when Alan Mulally left to become CEO of Ford Motor Co., said the first six 787s, all test aircraft, will be above weight specifications. All the company's energies are focused on the seventh and a plan is in place to get the weight off, he said.

Boeing shares rose 79 cents to $91.52 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange, just off last month's all-time high of $92.05.

Sizzling demand for the 787 coupled with lengthy delays involving Airbus' planned A380 superjumbo have enabled Boeing to seize momentum and close the gap on Airbus in the commercial airplane market. But Carson, making his first formal presentation to Wall Street, expects the competition to remain intense and said his company must fight complacency with things going so well.

"People say, 'Well, you're in a favorite position to Airbus because they're struggling,'" he said. "I say Airbus emerges from this stronger than they've ever been in, and we better be ready for it."

Asked when the largest U.S. carriers are likely to order new planes again, Carson said he expects UAL Corp.'s United Airlines, AMR Corp.'s American Airlines and Delta Air Lines Inc. to be ready in late 2007 or 2008.

I think USAir just ordered some more A321s, and are still on the hook for eventual A350s. Come on Parker, go after someone else with the same fleet types, different hubs (areas), and someone who actually wants to merge with you. USAir was very happy to, but others may not.

I don't think any pilot really wants this deal. So having said that let's look at one of the facts you continue to spew. US IS NOT BEHOLDEN TO AIRBUS FOR ANY ODERS OF THE 350!!! AIRBUS DROPPED THE BALL WITH THIS AND US CAN WALK AWAY FROM THE DEAL!!! THE LOAN HAS BEEN REPAYED IN FULL!!! CLEAR!!!

I think it is pretty safe to say that this deal will fail. Thanks of course to your MEC that seems to be putting the necessary pressure(congress, member of the creditors committee) on Parker. I applaude Moak.

Andy:
You're correct. Its a bad deal for ALL employees. The only ones making out in the deal are the managers (Parker in particular), the lawyers, and the bankers. Everyone else gets the big cornholio!
If the creditors find that there is going to be labor trouble, they will walk away from this faster than a real pilot at an rjdc rally!

What about that recent order for A321s (7 I believe) and more A320s? Will Parker drop those too? Boeing would rather deal exclusively with one airline, rather than a mish mash with another. With those new Airbus orders, USAir wouldn't be able to have as big as an order than DL, who would likely buy ALL Boeing, including new 737-700s to replace the MD88s, and 787s to replace the 767-300ERs. CLEAR!!? And, Moak is doing a good job.

I know I am lowly Comair, not welcomed in the LGA ops, etc, but I see this deal as just US Air wants to buy their direct competion. DAL and USA have so many overlapping routes in the east, USA is probably afraid of Delta. Better to buy your competition, then to compete with your competition.

"The only ones making out in the deal are the managers (Parker in particular), the lawyers, and the bankers."

YEAH. DOESN'T THAT TELL YOU SOMETHING GENIUS?

Ever hear of the phrase: "Follow the MONEY." ?

(Ooooh, but the PILOTs don't want it. Lee Moak, and The General, said SO! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah )

You Jag Offs....

I am LAUGHING MY ASS OFF.

Just how stupid ARE you people?

Pilots = Retards / Mongoloids / Downs Babys

Actually, I am wrong with the above Politically Incorrect statement....It is an insult to the latter Group. I'm sorry Retards.

Thanks for Playing...

SO...The only people that REALLY have a say in the matter? Besides the Creditors.

DL pilots are creditors, and we suppsedly have a contract that was agreed upon by the BK judge that would stop a merger with it's stipulations. But hey, thanks for being here....

Get something righ. It wasn't a recent order. It was a readjustment of a/c type from orders already on the books.

Did you see the nice poster Boeing made for us a few months ago. Interesting Boeing would do such a thing for an Airbus customer which they want no part of.

When you compare probable future orders, DL's would be much more lucrative because we probably would go with an all Boeing fleet, not a hodge podge like you guys (Airbus, Embraer, and Boeing). Boeing knows this. But hey, they would still like to build you a few planes I am sure.
