Delta Accepting Pilot Applications
Wednesday December 20, 12:00 pm ET
ATLANTA, Dec. 20, 2006 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Delta Air Lines today will officially begin accepting applications for new-hire pilots in anticipation of exhausting its pilot furlough list in 2007. Interviews for new Delta first officer positions are scheduled to begin in January.

``Starting the hiring process again is a significant milestone for our pilot group,'' said Steve Dickson, vice president of Flight Operations and a 757/767 Captain. ``It signifies the likely return of our last furloughed pilot, and provides hope for growth and career advancement for current pilots.''
Delta recently announced that it would need approximately 200 additional pilots during 2007 in order to meet the demands of the flying schedule due to network restructuring and international expansion. These pilots will come from a combination of pilots returning from furlough and new hire pilots.

``Clearly, this announcement, coupled with our recently announced order for new Boeing 737 and 777 aircraft as well as the planned acquisition of 13 Boeing 757s, shows that Delta's plan is working and the future for the Delta pilot group looks bright,'' Dickson said.

Pilots interested in submitting an application are encouraged to view the Careers page at delta.com: (http://www.delta.com/about_delta/career_opportunities/index.jsp)

Delta's call for new pilots marks the first time since 2001 that the airline has accepted applications from prospective pilots. During 2006, Delta has offered recall to more than 340 pilots, in addition to recalls of 900 maintenance professionals and 1,200 flight attendants. The company continues to hire in its Airport Customer Service and Reservations divisions.

Delta continues to make significant progress in all areas of its restructuring including filing its plan of reorganization, which would have Delta emerge from Chapter 11 during spring 2007 as a stand-alone carrier.

Delta Air Lines (Other OTC:DALRQ.PK - News) offers customers service to more destinations than any global airline with Delta and Delta Connection carrier service to 303 destinations in 52 countries. With more than 50 new international routes added in the last year, Delta is America's fastest growing international airline and is a leader across the Atlantic with flights to 31 trans-Atlantic destinations. To Latin America and the Caribbean, Delta offers more than 400 weekly flights to 56 destinations. Delta's marketing alliances also allow customers to earn and redeem SkyMiles on more than 14,000 flights offered by SkyTeam and other partners. Delta is a founding member of SkyTeam, a global airline alliance that provides customers with extensive worldwide destinations, flights and services. Including its SkyTeam and worldwide codeshare partners, Delta offers flights to 459 worldwide destinations in 97 countries. Customers can check in for flights, print boarding passes and check flight status at delta.com.

Why is everyone so excited. 200 pilots with first dibs going to friends, family and X chromosomes.

Actually is says the need 200 additional pilots, drawn from the 97 still on the street and new hires. I doubt all 97 will return, but it does not say they will hire 200.

News Flash - SkyWest will hire more in the next six weeks than Delta will in 2007.

News Flash-Those "hired" by Delta will make more in Six weeks than a Skywest FO in 6 months.

...I say good for Delta, I'd apply if I was interested...

OK, but the SkyWest hired two years ago is already in the left seat making more than the Delta pilot. The Delta pilot will not catch up for another 4 years.

Just playing with you... my app is in... screwing with General Lee makes it worth the fee.

Technically, everyone has at least one X chromosome. And while obviously the number could be higher, at least it's a step in the right direction. The real question is how many regional captains will be unwilling to give up their current seniority and go back to the bottom somewhere else.

i bet not that many......however there are few reasons why ANY regional FO who meets those mins, 1200 TT and 1000 turbine, will not apply. Just my guess.....I know I am applying

I must admit, with all the throwing of banana peels in front of each other by regional pilots to get a quick 1000 PIC, its pretty funny to see that people/FOs at regionals like AE and Horizon etc... with long upgrades will have an equal chance.....internal help will most likely trump the pic :-) gotta love it

Well, Delta and most other airlines always say something along the lines of "We don't hire pilots, we hire Captains." I know they value the PIC time greatly. All of those "tell me about a time" stories are much better when YOU are the one making the decisions.

Sure everyone is always going to know some guy that "beat the system" but in my class, almost every civillian guy in there made it via the tried and true method of upgrading. So don't lose heart you salty old RJ Captains!

Good luck to everyone...look forward to seeing some more Deltoids around here to share the LGA crew lounge with. ;)

I'd hate to be the HR guru in charge of this debacle. THat poor schmuck is about to be tits deep in applications. I hope mine falls near the nips!

OK, but the SkyWest hired two years ago is already in the left seat making more than the Delta pilot.

A two year Skywest pilot in the left seat of a CRJ70 makes what $58/hr, a 2 year DAL pilot will make $66/hr in the right seat of a MD88. You don't even want to go and compare top of pay scales betweeen a 777 Captain and CRJ70 captain.

Many times more than the number of interviews offered. I very much doubt DAL will have any difficulty finding qualified candidates from the regionals, military and supplemental carriers.

That pretty much sums it up. An FO and good friend of mine at the current regional we work for said he received a call from someone that will be doing the hiring at Delta and asked if he'd be ready for an interview in Jan. He is a former Delta intern.

Wish I would have taken the Delta internship I was offered back in college now instead of the United one. Any news on possible UAL hiring anytime soon?

Yes, but the CRJ70 CA is 27 and single and the 2 yr DAL MD88 pilot is 45 with 3 kids. Right now the job stability is with the SKYW gang.

All the more reason to make the move now.

Even if you assume a 2 year upgrade to CRJ Captain($58/hr) a two year DAL MD88 F/O still makes more($67/hr). You would have to be a 7 year Skywest CRJ captain to make as much as a 2 year DAL MD88 F/O. You'd then have to wait until your 12th year at Skywest to match the pay of a 3 year DAL MD88 F/O. The top of scale pay rate for an 18 year Skywest captain doesn't even match the pay rate of a 7 year DAL 737-800 F/O.

As far as job security, well that's what the CMR pilots were boasting about not too long ago. There is very little job security in this industry and even less so when you're a contractor who has to constantly bid for the flying.
