says meets US Air, plans no merger
Thu Nov 30, 2006 5:26pm ET

NEW YORK, Nov 30 (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines Inc. (DALRQ.PK: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Thursday it listened to a presentation by US Airways Group Inc. (LCC.N: Quote, Profile, Research) concerning US Airways' $8.5 billion takeover offer for Delta, but repeated earlier statements that it intends to emerge from bankruptcy as a stand-alone carrier.
"Consistent with our obligation to review US Airways' unsolicited proposal, today we, along with representatives of our creditors' committee, met to listen to US Airways' presentation," the airline said in a statement.
"While we will fulfill this obligation, we will, as we have stated, continue to progress toward filing our stand-alone plan by the end of the year, which would have us emerge from bankruptcy as a highly competitive, independent and financially sound airline by mid-2007," the statement

WHOA! Stop the presses! TC

What will Delta stock be worth when they come out of bankruptcy?

The creditors stand to make a fortune if they get stock options at the right time, ride the wave from the start! I think the banks and creditors like Delta right were it is. Ever notice how over the last 30 years airlines just go from bankruptcy to a huge power house, and then go down hill into bankruptcy again, almost like clockwork.

There is an angle here, those with money interests in these companies pump the well damn near dry, then run the thing into the ground, say there sorry, bad management, whatever, then start the process all over again.

Delta, like the rest are golden eggs that seem immune to normal business practice and policy.

David Bonderman and the Texas Pacific Group own 55% of America West Holdings. Any question who is behind this attempted takeover? TPG just made a run on Qantas also. Bonderman's on the board of Ryanair. If I were a member of the Democratic congress I would take a hard look at this guy trying to tie up a good portion of the world's aviation companies.

Stick with your rj junior and be happy!

Well, I guess we're all a bunch a dirt bags if the FA's say so.. yup, must be. By the way, I didn't know pilots of other airlines actually listened AND believed what HP FA's had to say. They must be a classy bunch of FA's over at HP!

You should hear what they have to say about you guys !! Although "Biff" thinks General Lee is a hottie !!

I dont think it is over. I'm sure if they want Delta, they will sweeten the deal.

So, does that mean Oberstar will change his stance? He doesn't want ANY mergers, because he knows if one big one goes, others will follow, and that will hurt consumer choice and small cities that will lose service when other mergers happen too. But, you seem to think it would go anyway, even though the CHAIRMAN of the committee is most likely not in favor. Sweeten away then.

Ryanair just tried to buy up Aer Lingus Stock for an attempted takeover, but was rebuffed also. Looks like it won't happen.

Yeah from what I hear..you pretty much are...

Wow, nice flame! Happy Holidays to you too! By the way, while we are all fighting amongst ourselves over who works for the "classier" airline, airline management (DAL, UAL, LCC- it doesn't matter) will be laughing all the way to the bank.

lee, Oberstar is your Santa Claus. I hope you haven't told your wife that you have pinned your future on Santa.

Well, he is one of many that will probably say no(besides the creditor committee shooting it down). The Department of Transportation and the DOJ will both say it is anti-competitive and bad for consumers. The overlap is just too much. Oberstar was just a committee member back during the UAL/US merger fiasco, and he made his views well known back then on how he dislikes mergers. Now, wouldn't you know it, he is the actual Chairman. Just like the democrats coming in right before age 65 legislation. Poor Rick Santorum, who sponsored and favored that rule change, got the boot. Darn it. Hillary in 2008!! (of course both Canada and Mexico will invade--and we will be renamed Mexada...)

A politician has never done that before.

I just think this wont be the last pitch by USAirways or any other airline for Delta.

sorry Homo,

I fly for a major airline - although 800d!ck or JT8Dsuckstart thinks otherwise

GHAWYSADWBSAF

.

Just because you fly a 90 seater for MESA, doesn't mean you fly for a major airline. Now I know its cool to tell all those high school girls you hang out with, and wear your cool wind breaker out so everyone thinks you're a REAL airline pilot, but get real kid, you're a nobody!

1. Too bad it's not up to them if the deal is taken or not - it's up to the judge who generally listens to the creditors.

2. Delta Stock - 99% of the time the current stock is cancelled and new stock is issued. This "new" stock is then used to pay off the creditors for what they were owed.

This is an over-simplification but the way to think about it is when a company is not in bankruptcy the stock-holders run the company. Once a company enters bankruptcy the creditors run the company.

Question for the General: Aren't the creditors usually most interested in cash to settle their claims? Seems like a number >8.6B would go a long way to settling those claims

only half that number is in cash, the rest in USAir stock. If the merger works, USAir stock will go up in the long run. If this merger doesn't work, USAir stock could end up at zero. So it depends on how well you think this merger will work.
