Those weren't terrorists. That was the State of Arizona, which was tired of being sued by Californians who got too close to the edge and fell in. This recent development pleases the backpackers, who have more room to hike.
It pleases the sierra club (who was hopefully buried at the bottom) because now the sound of aircraft is muffled by dirt, and there is no more reason to fly the ditch. It pleases everybody, in fact, except the river runners, and the Havasupai Indians who live at the bottom of the Canyon.
