Disgusting, offensive letter to USAToday

The following letter was printed in Friday's USA Today. Someone on another board did some research and came up with this guy's website, complete with e-mail addresses to let him know what you think (Mr. Doebbler's website)

Service members aren't heroes

Americans have a tendency to call members of our armed forces heroes. I disagree. I've seen our troops in several wars and would conclude that the term ''cowards'' suits them better.

Why? Consider:

* I've watched how members of the armed forces bomb defenseless countries from 30,000 feet, killing both soldiers and civilians without discretion.

* I've seen our soldiers and leaders appear willing to go to war when the illegality of the conflict was apparent.

* I've considered the pictures and reports I've seen in the media during the past few days. They tell how greatly inferior the Iraqi army and civilians are as they are challenged by the world's deadliest fighting force.

The Iraqi people are undoubtedly my heroes. They are defending their country from a foreign invasion against all odds. Only international law and the pride of their country are behind them.

I salute them.

Mr. Doebbler-

In a published opinion, you asked the public to consider several points in support of your opinion the US Soldiers are "cowards". Let's ignore that the "cowardice" of which you speak is what has given you the ability to publicly express such a misguided view, and go right to your "observations".

While I'm certain that you have considered many countries to be "defenseless", it is a statement devoid of logic to suggest that these countries are "defenseless" or that bombs are dropped "without discretion". By any reasonable standard, neither observation is true. Even if they were true, neither supports the idea of US soldiers being "cowards".

Some could make the same argument regarding our actions with the allies during WWII. Who determines the "legality" of a war? There is no high court, and no world body to make such a ruling or legislation. War, while repugnant and dangerous, is often the necessary last resort of aggrieved parties on the world stage. This observation also fails to speak to any "cowardice" of US forces.

True. Did those reports also reveal to you how the Iraqis have violated a time-honored tradition by using the white flag of "surrender" to bait out US forces into an ambush? Perhaps THIS is the example of cowardice for which you are looking, on the part of the Iraqis.

The Iraqi people are also my heroes. They have persevered under a brutal dictator, been tortured, raped, and summarily executed in a manner that has not been commonplace since Nazi Germany. The Iraqi troops are acting on pure fear that we will once again decide to leave before their liberation is complete. We won't let them down, this time. International law is not behind them, and you know it, sir. The Iraqi government has not met the terms of the cease fire agreement of the Gulf War, and has violated the terms of many resolutions that encouraged and chastised the regime for over a decade.

None of what you have written is worthy of a professor of multicultural studies, much less a professor of law. You have failed to produce viable evidence to support your argument, and your closing argument contains a misstatement of fact. As a professional, I hope your knowledge of statute exceeds your poor grasp of America's documented role as a force, yes a BRAVE force, for good in this troubled world.

Our soldiers deserve not only your respect, but your gratitude for your ability to make such an unreasoned and inflammatory statement in public. Your right to free speech was purchased by them, and at little cost to you.

Try not to abuse this right. Freedom is precious.

What a hypocrite

This guy is incredible. On one page, he refers to the illegal war against a sovereign nation and calls American soldiers "cowards". Then on another page, he writes this:

"Like boss, Bill Clinton, Gore appears to prefer appleasement (sic) rather than confrontation and thus does little to respond to China's human rights record or to human rights problems..."

It seems like he's another guy who just simply hates America, and we're d*mned if we do, d*mned if we don't.

This idiot says he's a human rights lawyer and activist, yet he totally turns a blind eye to the obvious human rights issues within Iraq and even goes so far to present the Iraqi regime as some kind of valiant organization defending their people. Makes you wanna puke.
