Anybody know anything about Delta employees all pitching in and buying an airplane in like 1982?

What is the story behind that?

Yup, the "Spirit of Delta" a 767 .... it just recently got the new paintjob (skipped the Ron Allen paint job and had moss growing on the classic paint job)

Supposedly there is a big patch on it below the Captain's window - a certain Delta mechanic ran a piece of ground equipment into it accidentally - that mechanic is now an ASA pilot! You out there, Mark?

While interning at DAL a couple of years ago, I was on the jumpseat of the "Spirit of Delta" and the captain was telling me this story. I can't remember all of it, maybe someone can fill in my missing part?

The captain was saying that the "Spirit" was suppose to be the first 767 in the fleet, but if you look at the tail number it is actually #2. I guess there is one other 76 in the fleet that actually made it onto the property first and has the first tail number in the series. I can't remember why the "Spirit" didn't make it onto the property first. I think it was something about a delay in its initial paint job. Does anyone know the rest of the story?

"The Spirit of Delta" was purchased by DL employees in 1982, not 81. It is registered N102DA, and was delivered on 10/25/82. As previously mentioned, N101DA was actually delivered after 102, on 3/25/83. She looks great in the new titles and Wavy Gravy!

People are now calling it "The Ghost of Delta Past."

I hope that we someday get that spirit back. It must have been one heck of a great place to work.
