Talked to a Fedex pilot today who said he heard some of the poolies got calls today...can any of you at the top of the list confirm or deny? I did not get a call but I am toward the bottom of the pool.

Not yet

According to KD, Im somwhere in the first 10 in the pool, and I have not heard anything yet.

I did hear the first class may be small and consist mostly of hires from within, pro (sim) instructors.

All theory at this point.

Im up at the top of the pool and have not heard anything yet. A friend called yesterday and asked if I got the call yet. He thought it should happen soon.

My good friend "waitinginline" is in the top 3 in the pool and I am sure if KD called he would have let me know. Lets just hope they start calling soon before my floaties deflate.

There are about 8 sim instructors and 3 other internals that are available for the line on May 15th. So my guess it that the first class will be made up mostly of these individuals. I'm not able to go until 07/01/04.

So long

Could you explain what all that means? Are the sim instructors not company pilots already? What are these other "internals"? Is it possible that poolies could continue to be displaced by other folks already onboard? You mention a "first" class. Do you have knowledge of more than one planned class? Thanks. Every little morsel is appreciated.

Professional Flight Instructors

FedEx has quite a few professional flight instructors as well as what they call flex instructors. Flex IPs are line pilots who alternate flying the line one month with 2 months in the school house. The professionals are full time instructors, some of whom are retired, some of whom are waiting for an opportunity to get interviewed and hired as a line pilot, and some who just want to instruct. There are also pilots who take jobs in other departments (like throwing the boxes during the sort) while they build time and wait for their chance to get hired as a line pilot. I don't know what, if any, preference they get either in the interviews or in class assignment. I haven't heard any good news about future classes in quite some time.

How does FedEx hire the professional sim instructors?

I had a professional instructor in my new hire class back in 2000. He said that you had to sign on for a 3 year tour of duty as an instructor and then you would get an interview. Once you got the interview you had the same chance as the guys who were not instructors who were interviewing. In fact, he said he knew of many FedEx professional instructors who did interview and then did not get hired. Go figure... good enough to teach the line pilots but not good enough to be one! Can't figure that one out for the life of me.

calls???

Has anyone heard anything? Know of anyone who has?

I am hesitant to post this but...

I was talking with a 727 instructor who said that at a training meeting yesterday they were told the June class was cancelled, and that there may not be a class this calender year.

:(

Unfortunately, that makes a lot of sense ... the military leave guys are starting to filter back in, so that should relieve some of the manning problems in the back of the Boeing.

Keep the faith,

Zulu,

Welcome home. Just noticed the avatar change. I'm hoping we dont' get swamped in JetBlue regret/envy while stuck on the panel for the next five years.

Poolies...got no advice except I'd apply to Jetblue, SWA, AK, and AirTran "just in case". This could be a loooong wait.

I just wish our pilot group would quit flying vol/draft as long as the hiring/training was frozen. They could train a nominal 8 a month and drain the pool....and keep things moving "up". However, our group doesn't advocate "work actions" to help advance the careers of the junior crewmembers--they compain about pay scales at their respective seats. As long as guys will trough up the flying, especially on the "high margin" MD11 flying, demand for new aircrews will be small.

Jethro, T38dude, and Zulu, et al...I know I should be "patient" here, but I'm never been a rate fight kind of guy. I like to throw the nose in lead and try to make something happen. Seniority progression is the ultimate rate fight game, however, and right now I feel like I'm going around the circle in mil power with my gear hanging down....

Anyone else tired of this guy with two jobs (one of them with a window seat and one of them at a major) whine about how he's not senior enough?

Moneyshooter,

Sorry If my "whining" is offensive. However, the fact is increased hiring at FedEx will not only help me (and every fighter pilot knows the world revolves around him ;) ) but the 60+ in the pool right now...and that is what this particular thread is about.

Based on your argument, I should sit back, shut up, and soak up the good life at FedEX and the ANG. Why not fly some volunteer/draft and earn some extra coin for momma and the kids while I'm at it? The answer is 1- I have a few bros in the pool and a LOT of guys wanting to join us at FDX and 2- In the long term, I'm just slowing down my own upgrade. Also--the fact is (and most guys doing ANG duty can tell you this) working 2 jobs, while fun at times, can also wear you out.

Since I've been on the line, I haven't work a full BLG except for perhaps 2 months. This isn't due to any "work action", but rather due to the fact if your unit wants you 7-10 days (weekdays at that), its very hard to satisfy that requirement and fly the number of days to get a full BLG.

Don't know what I posted that could have irritated you so much, but I've tried to pass out info and gouge to those interested in FedEx (or JetBlue) along the way, and encourage a few young hopefuls prepping for UPT on the military board. If any of that comes off as "excess ego" or "whining", it was not intended. I've got a stack of resumes from some GREAT people who want interviews at FedEx, and some of my frustration is I can't help them out right now in this enviroment. The sooner the pool logjam gets free, the sooner more folks can have a shot at a job they can "appreciate".

Fly safe...

PS..Heat...my frustration is there is NO nose position fight in this game--not what we are used to. Is this Heat a former Bonehead/former WIC IP?

I Understand your frustration

Albie,
Look on the positive side -- you're not going backward in seniority like the "10" guys are -- YET! The over 60 crowd is killing us. Plus, the conservative hiring practice, while not good for poolies, does allow for some sense of job security. And you have to love a pilot group that will subsidize a $200,000/yr career for a poor decision.
