wow, that's brilliant...or at least that was my first thought...with just one engine to deal with/carry fuel for, D-jet would probably be ideal for short hops...no multi rating, although a type in a jet would still be required, right? single pilot ops, not to mention only one engine to service

oh, and not having to worry about certifying an airplane with its engines in development...priceless (I hope they know what will go in that thing, unlike the Eclipse)

mmm, rich, private pilot...no, not me...but you're right, the D-jet would take some bread and butter away from some 135ers here and there

Hmm sounds like a great product. Sorry but I'm skeptical.

Well, I know what you are saying. But I'd rather see those guys out flying a single engine jet instead of a two engine jet. I think it will be much easier for them to handle.

ATP's have killed more people than

...engine failures. And most engine failures are pilot induced. With fadec and other flight management systems, driving that jet will be about as easy as driving a lexus. After all, the physical operation of an airplane, can be done by a monkey. It's all the other stuff, like talking to controllers and making tough decisions like picking which radio to put the atis on, that takes a PIC!

Don't worry, the insurance companies will set the most restrictive rules pertaining to single engine jets and who will fly them and under what restrictions.

This brings up another point...the FAA required mins for driving a 747 or other large jet as a required crewmember (f.o.) is what? Enough time to get the commercial multi instrument and a class II medical. Some flopping around in a sim and a groundschool? Shazaam! you got an airline pilot. The captain keels over and jr is driving the big bus. Can you imagine that happening on IOE? whew...we need new regs. They should make it mandatory that when the new hire is on IOE, that TWO captains be aboard a plane so in the event the first captain pukes up a stroke or heart attack, they can have a redundant captain.

Correlate that over to your two engines and experience level argument!

Automation and new technologies are going to hit this industry pretty hard...If I were you guys, I would worry less about rich guys flying their own jet planes, putting pilots out of work and concentrate on picketing those defense contractors that are producing some really fine autonomous aircraft. After all, military technology trickles into the civilian sector quite a bit.
