i was told by a friend that the judge ruled DHL was a US company, in regards to the whole FedEx/UPS lawsuit thing..

does anyone have any info?
future hiring?
if DHL grows/hires, will Airborne do the same?

Astar Air Cargo & ABX Air, Inc.

Look under top stories for the ruling on citizenship.

As far as hiring, maybe GoABX could chime in on that? I know there was a posting about a month ago concerning retirements over the next several years. I've heard around 20+ per year -- last I heard, there were still about 30 PFE's on furlough.

There are 30 pilots still on furlough, not PFEs. I make the distinction b/c there currently is a pissing contest between the PFEs and the junior pilots. Of the 30, I guess that about 5-10 will not return due to getting hired at other airlines (UPS, FDX, AirTran, JetBlue).

The Astar ruling was huge for them AND for us as UPS/FDX filed the identical complaint against us with the DOT. Our case is now moot, but they will probably have at least an abbreviated hearing, if not the full ordeal.

Supposedly things will start happening quickly after the beginning of the year...for both companies. As I have said before the pilots of Airborne and Astar have either struck out or hit a home run. We just don't know which yet. And the answer for one may not be same as for the other.

ABX has 16 retirements (revised #) in 2004 and we are not exactly fat on pilots. I can't guarantee we will hire this year but my guess would be the recalls will start in the Q1. Hiring will have to start no later than 05 unless they plan on seriously shrinking the airline. Who knows maybe they announce an order of 737 and 767 freighters and we start hiring out of the shoot.

If anyone really wants Airborne for a career, then I would be sending them a resume every month. It's only 37 cents. They will probably be $hitcanned for a while, but eventually you will be the first guy in the In-Basket.

Opinion only....no fact.

My guess is recalls would begin in Q1, not be done in Q1. The wildcard may be what they do with the DC-8s and how many displaced PFEs could pass the upgrade. Also, if there was a merger they may bring everyone back (if they were nice) OR they might leave them on furlough b/c we'd instantly be overstaffed.

The PFE issue is dirty laundry that would take a long time to discuss and may not be appropriate for this board. If there is a merger, the Astar boys will probably bring it up yet again. Unfortunately, there is no clear cut solution and most everyone has strong feelings.

I fly for DHL UK and 1 of the rumours is that the Long Haul flying will be moved to EAT or DHL Air in the futher flying MD11 or and B767,but then there are lots of Rumours and only silence from management.
DHL is still expanding in Europe and they keep talking about wanting a bigger slice of the American Pie.
They have 2 airlines in Europe mainly to work them agains each other and preventing a complete shutdown in the event of a strike.
BRU handling striked earlier this year and DHL moved everything to other hubs and still got 80% of the work done ,this was then used to show the BRU workers that they could work without them and to back down!!
For this reason i would think they also want to keep 2 airlines in the US.
