Recently I was denied the j/s by a gate agent at a mainline carrier who was working one of their connection carriers flights.

I checked in, showed my id, passport, etc and she gave me the jumpseat request printout showing that I was in Cass. This was a DAL agent working an ASA flight in ATL. This was not an agent hired from ASA to work at DAL when DAL took over the gates in the C concourse, this was in B.

So everyone boards, its full, going to ride the cockpit j/s, and she gets on the computer and tells me that there is a problem and I cannot ride. She tells me that AirTran must not have an agreement with ASA. I explained to her that we do have an agreement and that I have been commuting on them for 2 years and have never had a problem. She then calls a supervisor over who tells me that I cannot go, and that if she were to allow me to ride that it would be a security violation.

I explained to her again tha this is the first time that this issue has come up and would it be possible to speak with the captain (I happened to know him personally) she told me that I could not talk to him and that the captain would not be able to help me. I told her that it is his j/s and I would like to speak with him about this issue. She said "No, it is my jumpseat and you cannot ride." So I thanked her and walked off and caught the next flight on ASA.

The city I commute from is a DAL station that works both DAL and ASA flights and this has not been an issue. The agents where I live told me that they, in ATL, obviously did not know what they were doing.

So who is king here, the captain or the gate agent? Who's j/s is it? And since I was initially given the cockpit j/s request that shows that I am in Cass then why the denial at the last minute?

Anyone else experience issues like this?

Its the CA's J/S, but you must get pass the gate agent first!! She was wrong thinking it was hers, but thats the power trip of some gate agents.

They call it "Empire Building." Or just plain stupidity. Sounds like you handled it as well as you could.

Tell your j/s coordintor, you'll actually get something done or I guess we could start another worthless thread about our favorite gate agents.

I thought it was odd one time when a gate agent told me they needed to see my pilots license since I was sitting in the cabin.

This particular agent checks passports if you ride in the cockpit and pilots license if you ride in the cabin.

I have emailed our j/s coordinator. Waiting for a reply.

The ironic thing is that I gave up a non-rev seat in the back, I am able to non-rev on DAL, to get non-revs on the plane and volunteered to the gate agent to ride the j/s to help out the DAL employees trying to get on the same flight. Won't do that again.

You should have gotten her name and then forwarded it to your J/S coordinator, and then he/she could forward it to ours. Also, if you can get a nonrev seat, always go for that first. And, if you actually see the Capt or even the FO in the gate area first, make sure you ask them there and then. They will wonder where you are if they don't see you board.

Bye Bye--General Lee

LOL! I once had an AA agent ask for my license. I showed it to her (it was a temporary) and she claimed it was expired (she was looking at the Feds signature and his designation expiration date). I pulled out my CFI license with no expiration date and she's like "yeah, that's the one I need".

OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aaaaannnnyways......I would definitely call the j/s coordinator AND the captain that was on the flight (since you know him/her) and get that $hit straightened out ASAP!

If this happened on Saturday night at B27-31 this is what happened: Delta operations called the gate agents via radio and advised them that Airtran pilots are not eligible for jumpseats. I don't know if that was caused by an earlier incident but your jumpseat coordinator may have more info.

Airtran ticket agent couldnt find Piedmont in the computer for nonrev agreements. The Delta counter had no problem getting me on their flight on the same route.

Quality ASA gate jerkoffs - its an Atlanta thing.

This is why I preflight early and make a quick walk through the gate area 15 minutes before departure. Can't tell you how many jumpseaters I've saved from gate agents this way.

Jumpseating the other day and had a gate agent ask me if I was a CA or an FO. WTF does that matter? Anyone ever heard this question?

I was in full uniform (hat and blazer too). The gate agent asked me if I was a pilot or flight attendant.....it was good for a chuckle...

Not to long ago a united agent in san said asked me that, and he said that only captains can ride in the jumpseat. I started laughing, but he was indeed serious. So he makes a call and asks someone if united express FOs can ride in the jumpseat. Turns out the answer was yes....what a cornholer.
