I'd also like to know how United can afford to get a new paint job on their planes given the current cost climate.

When you have been around for 80 years you have to repaint some airplanes.
 
Would that relate to Inter-granular corrosion? Stress corrosion? Pitting? I've had over 20 years of detailed exposure to aircraft maintenance and corrosion treatment and prevention.

It looks like cosmetic painting to me, which is not a corrosion treatment. Maybe it's not, but I bet it cost a bunch to design and implement the new paint job.
 
And, all of that debt you described will be reduced by a lot as soon as ASA and Comair are handed over to someone else.
