I started airline thing in Jan of 1995 as a security guard at ORD in the parking garage walking dogs I would see the airplanes flying overhead and said "Hey I want to be involved in that!" , I took a job at Great Lakes Airlines at ORD.
Great Lakes Airlines was not the best airline, nor did it pay a lot ($6.00/hr if I recall) but it was a fun job. I worked the 6a-2:30pm shift, it was nice to load the Beechcraft 1900 C,D models and then the Brasilia. Wow I can remember cold days at ORD, but all in all the job was fun. One thing I learned from that job was that the airlines are a family.
After leaving Great Lakes in Mar of 1998 I got the brilliant idea of going to school at the ATA Maintenance Academy in IND. Hey I was going to be a mechanic!!!! After less than 1 year there I dropped out. Why you ask? Well the things that were being taught had nothing to do with what really goes on in the real world. I am not going to change a tire by myself ATA WAKE UP!!!! But to tell you the truth what persuaded me to stop the whole MX route was I got a P/T job in the hanger at ATA looking at this same L-1011 for the year that I worked there. I said hey this is not for me. But what I learned was is that the airlines are a family.
Before leaving IND I got a job as a parts clerk at CHQ, now that was a fun job staring at the same old part all day long. No TV no radio just parts A/C parts. But what did I learn you guessed it the airlines are a family.
Since I left Great Lakes on good terms I was accepted back I worked there for another 2 years before getting a wonderful job at Southwest Airlines, so I thought. After 2 interviews I got hired as a ramp agent at MDW, making 7.00/hr after a year I made 7.50hr. We loaded 7 737's in a single shift, oh I still got my 1/2 and 15 min breaks but that by far is the hardest ramp work you will ever do. But why did I leave SWA? This is why the union sucks!!!!!! They have this rule at SWA that says they can mandatory you to work up to 7 1/2 hours after your assigned shift and then you have to come back in the am for your shift. Being low on the seniority list this happened many times over the course of a year. I worked am shift so I had thanksgiving eve off, no I don't think so got junior-ed per say, with my family standing outside waiting for me, thanks SWA. Oh this happened Christmas as well. Why did I have to work cause a senior person on the night shift called in sick. But one thing I learned was that the airlines are a family, you roll with the punches.
So after the hard labor at SWA I got hired as a Parts Manager at U.F.S. (United Feeder Service) at ORD. That job lasted about 6 months before Air Wisconsin bought us out. That was a fun job as well, learned a lot. One thing I learned was don't fly an airplane that there are only 10 of in the United States, we flew the British Aerospace ATP.
When UFS closed I got a job as a ramp agent at Continental at ORD, I quit in a week. It is something about using a school bus as a break room in 20 below weather at ORD.......Yeah it was pretty cold for 6.25/hr 20 hours a week.
Then I got the job of a lifetime working for the wonderful Delta Airlines at ORD, I must say I WAS impressed with the ORD operation, and finally working on big planes. I graduated from a ramp agent to a Aircraft Load Agent and then a Tower Agent in less than a year. Great group of guys there, my first day in the bin at DL my trainer told me you will amount to nothing in this industry. Well after learning all I could at ORD I transfered to ATL the mecca of Delta. Well got treated even worse down there. 9/11 happened and got laid off in ATL. Not a lot of jobs in ATL just Airtran, and for some reason they don't like DL folk. But remember the airlines are a family.
Well after going a month unemployed got a job loading planes for the federal reserve bank in ATL. That was a good job I enjoyed it, but once airlines are in your blood you can't do anything else can you?
Moved back to MDW and got a job working for Comair (owned by DL) worked ramp up there until I got a job at CVG. Comair is a wonderful company to work for, best one I have ever worked for. Well a year down the road here comes DL. Comair we are going to take 30 of your planes, cut your pay and lay you off. WHAT!!!!!!!!!! Yeah cause we own you. They sold ASA which was the best thing that could have happened to them. What happened to that wonderful company I worked for at ORD, well DL is contracting it. Then they go into bankruptcy OH made how much for DL last year? Yeah no one knows DL took all that.
So now after 10 years in this industry and many jobs later I am forced to take a pay cut and in danger of losing my job. Thanks DL. So now I hear that the DL pilots may force the company to liquidate, because they don't want to take a pay cut. Well hmm NWA,AA, and every other airline that wants to survive has taken one why not DL? Do you remember Eastern? Guess not.
In my opinion the DL pilots are not looking out for the countless number of other people in the DL family that will be affected by this, they are only thinking of themselves. But remember the airlines are a family. Well you are not taking care of home.

We all make choices in our lives. You've made a lot of very poor ones.Ramp Agent said:
