Makes sense to me. CVG has long been profitable for DAL. Its expensive to fly outta there. Do any LCC's even serve CVG?

No LCC, unless you count US airways.

I thought it was supposed to be expensive to, but when I went to purchase a ticket I got a round trip CVG direct to MCO for 250 bucks (first thought that went through my mind was no wonder we aren't making money)...that included all taxes. I was fairly surprised I was budgeting for double that, not that I'm complaining.

MCO might have had something to do with it...Alot of folks drive to DAY to catch AirTran DAY-MCO non-stop. Delta has to have cheap fares to compete with the non-stops outta DAY. I assume everyting else is pricey.

I've read the letter attributed to Anderson.

What do you think it would read? Something like this?

"After merging, we intend to discontinue our hub operations at CVG and directly and indirectly cause the loss of 20,000 jobs in your area. Thanks for your support as we pursue ongoing efforts to increase our bonuses."

I'm not saying CVG will be impacted either positively or negatively by a merger. I'm just asking everyone consider the source...a company that took Comair through bankruptcy during a time when Comair management under oath stated the company was projected to earn $50 million in the same year the bankruptcy was filed.

The day before NWA and DAL filed CH11 they said they had not considered it. Think of all the things airlines mgmts have said in the last few years that turned out to be untrue. The only thing you can be sure of is CVG is here today. Let tomorrow worry about tomorrow.

That's the exception.....CVG is bad in general, Delta out of there is even worse....EYW to DAY and back was $700 less per ticket than out of CVG...it was much easier to justify coming home for the weekend to the boss with those savings

With the several LCC's operating within 90 minutes and the prices that Delta charges CVG is mostly a pass through hub. I have seen several articles in recent years talking about the lack of O&D traffic for Delta at that hub.

Newsbreak*********************

For all practical purposes, CVG has already shut down! Look at the mainline flights today, compared to just a few years ago.

SLC is next! If there is a merger, CVG will not be needed as MSP and Detroit are too close. SLC will not be needed, as LAX and Seattle will survive. There is very little originating traffic in SLC.

Who the hell is operating between EYW and DAY?!!!

I don't see CVG or SLC closing because they are already scaled way back. I could see them becoming non domicile "mini hubs", or "virtual bases". But CVG is very valuable as a pass through for Delta from the Northeast (particularly with RJs to small cities... good for CMR). And DTW doesn't have the capacity to absorb all that feed, because the new NWA terminal is at capacity.

As for SLC, it's about 1500 miles from MSP, I'd say too far to be a competing hub. And SLC does have a lot of O&D traffic what with the ski resorts, and LDS activities. Not to mention that SLC is growing like crazy and lot of companies are located there. SLC doesn't compete with LAX because most LAX stuff (like JFK) is transcon and int'l. SLC mostly feeds the inter mountain west with smaller planes (good for SKW). That won't change.

SLC is one of those metropolitan areas that doubles in size every few decades. Still, its a hub due to its proximity to the west coast, not for local traffic. The majority of passengers are there just to connect to another flight.

If you think LAX and SLC have similiar roles for Delta, you're only showing your own ignorance and you might want to refrain from the "newsbreak" comments to avoid digging yourself into a hole.

 Ignorance? I said LAX and SLC are NOT similar in that LAX is mostly transcon and int'l and SLC is a feeder for the inter mountain west.

Reading & comprehension? Apparently Hooked on Phonics didn't work for you.

Why is CVG so expensive to fly out of? I've heard one story that it's taxes for both Kentucky and Cincinnati

Easy there John, speaking of misreading...... My response was to Speedtape, not you. Pardon me for trying to supplement your response.

Ok, well if that the case, I apologize, but excuse me for mistaking. You did after all, not say who you were responding to, nor quote the post. Also, your post came right after mine. Why wouldn't I think you were responding to me?

Additonally, if the argument is that SLC traffic would be handled by MSP, think back a couple years when Delta had to decide between SLC and DFW. Location was more important than locally originating traffic.

Also, by Speedtape's reasoning, United would have closed Denver a long time ago where they have two west coast hubs (SFO and LAX) and one in the northern midwest (ORD).

There were a couple scenarios which I felt did threaten Delta's SLC hub (United and USAir in particualr), but I don't think an NWA merger would have nearly the same implications.

Anyway, don't mean to hijack a CVG thread by talking about SLC.

Lack of competition at CVG is another reason often cited.

The issue with CVG that always is ignored is that on the city pairs where they do "compete" the fares are nearly identical...CVG-DFW $449 (made up number) on DL, AA (or even UA with cnx in ORD). To EWR? $339? You bet on CO, too. They'll charge what they can and you can bet the competition will join right in.

CVG is a fortress hub. Someone already (B727FA)stated that the fares are comparable out of CVG to other airline hubs (DFW, ORD, PHL, EWR, etc) but to cities where there is no direct competition there is no need to have competitive pricing...you've got a captive audience.

Fares get raised to those cities until the consumer decides it's easier to drive 2 hours to another city and originate there instead of CVG.

The proximity of DAY, SDF, IND and the LCC's that fly into those cities have fares reflect the competition. It's less expensive to originate out of those cities and fly to XYZ than it is out of CVG to fly to XYZ.

Whatever happened to Simplifares? The long term parking lot always seemed full during this time now it's a huge lot with very few cars.

I fly in and out of CVG every week from many different cities (including MCO) and have yet to see a one-way ticket for less than $700.

Again, apologies John.....

Don't try to befriend this guy, and for god's sake, DON"T APOLOGIZE to him. He is only here to bust people's balls! Nothing else. He will talk about nailing your mother, and then complain about personal attacks. You'll see what I mean when you see the response to this.

As you can see, Captain Richard Head, Captain of the Mighty CRJ 200 got b1tch slapped and still hasn't recovered.

SLC has low yields.

Ski season lasts an average of 4 months at best and the loads only increase on 3 day weekends.

LAX is the future for Delta as it can serve as an international gateway along with Seattle if there is a Northwest merger. NWA had an international gateway at LAX at one time.

If the SLC hub cannot support International flights to Europe, first test being in March, Ba-Bye! Maybe OO can make it on their on in SLC?

CVG has already been scaled back. Comair made money there before they were purchased. However, if Mainline does not maintain a hub there, due to scope, Comair will not have a hub as a Delta Connection.

No matter what is being said today, if there is a merger, many things will change! The only hub that will be safe is Atlanta.

And DTW.

I think MSP and DTW are safe. MEM is gone. SFO and BOS will stay stong focus "gateways."

On the DL side:
ATL safe. CVG maintains "hub" status, though moves to larger "regional" a/c...regardless of who flies it. SLC becomes more like CVG with similar a/c. LAX is rebuilt as a gateway for Asia.

Or not.

So, again, why did they close DFW over SLC? Your reasoning doesn't hold water.

Don't think of the SLC as a small city in the mountain west, think of it as a midpoint for connecting in the west. You can get anywhere on the west coast in under 2 hours from SLC. Again, location is more important than originating traffic. It's a hub and spoke network, not point to point.

Oh, and Richard, believe me, I've seen many of John's posts and realize how inflammatory he can be. He's in that category with General Lee. If you don't take him personal, you can sift the facts from the opinions and possibly learn something.
