Delta to challenge for Buffalo-NYC market share
Tuesday March 7, 2:36 pm ET
Delta Air Lines Inc.'s plan to invest $10 million to renovate facilities at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport will result in added service to and from Buffalo and other upstate markets.

As of June 8, Delta will launch four found-trip flights between Buffalo Niagara International Airport and JFK, Atlanta-based Delta (Pink Sheets: DALRQ - News) announced Tuesday. Similar service between JFK and Rochester, Syracuse and Albany will also be offered. In all Delta said it will offer 139 peak-day flights between JFK and 67 worldwide destinations by September.
New York City is the most popular destination for Buffalo air travelers and JFK airport is the most used facility. Delta's added service to JFK will be half that of JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU - News), which this month is increasing its daily round-trip JFK flight count to eight. US Air offers service to nearby LaGuardia Airport while Continental Airlines services the metropolitan New York area via Newark International Airport.
"The more direct flights, the more service, the more options travelers have, the better it is," said Lawrence Meckler, executive director of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, which operates BNIA. "We've come a long way. We just seem to keep adding and we're going to continue talking to other airlines to add flights and service."
Passenger traffic in and out of BNIA for 2005 neared the 5 million mark, the highest ever and up 13 percent from the previous year, according to NFTA figures.
The new service from Delta will be operated by MD88 aircraft and carriers Comair and Freedom Airlines, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mesa Air Group.
