Delta to challenge for Buffalo-NYC market share
Tuesday March 7, 2:36 pm ET
Delta Air Lines Inc.'s plan to invest $10 million to renovate facilities at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport will result in added service to and from Buffalo and other upstate markets.

As of June 8, Delta will launch four found-trip flights between Buffalo Niagara International Airport and JFK, Atlanta-based Delta (Pink Sheets: DALRQ - News) announced Tuesday. Similar service between JFK and Rochester, Syracuse and Albany will also be offered. In all Delta said it will offer 139 peak-day flights between JFK and 67 worldwide destinations by September.
New York City is the most popular destination for Buffalo air travelers and JFK airport is the most used facility. Delta's added service to JFK will be half that of JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU - News), which this month is increasing its daily round-trip JFK flight count to eight. US Air offers service to nearby LaGuardia Airport while Continental Airlines services the metropolitan New York area via Newark International Airport.
"The more direct flights, the more service, the more options travelers have, the better it is," said Lawrence Meckler, executive director of the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, which operates BNIA. "We've come a long way. We just seem to keep adding and we're going to continue talking to other airlines to add flights and service."
Passenger traffic in and out of BNIA for 2005 neared the 5 million mark, the highest ever and up 13 percent from the previous year, according to NFTA figures.
The new service from Delta will be operated by MD88 aircraft and carriers Comair and Freedom Airlines, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mesa Air Group.

Guess what, American Eagle used to fly all those named routes in RJs and SAAB 340s to JFK-- they found out that competing against 156 seats and live tv wasn't even reasonable. So, since Delta went bankrupt trying to fly against us to FL, does management really think this is going to help them out??? Another poor choice of routes. Last I saw, we were still charging $49 each way to upstate NY... Good Luck Delta!!!!

Just another instance of using bankruptcy as a weapon. What effect it will have is yet to be determined.

You can have the $49 BUF-JFK traffic.

The true rationale behind Delta's increse of those markets is to increase the international feed from JFK.

Exactly. DAL is just beefing up their connecting options for BUF bound intl pax. The ~1730 departure bank was truly a sight to behold from an RJ standpoint - between the remote parking area as well as gate 18, there had to be more than 30 RJs from all the DCI carriers (except SKYW) going to a slew of places east of the Mississippi.

If Delta's plan is to increase the international feed from the upstate cities, and it works, then the RJ they will be using will be overloaded with a lot of baggage (international passengers usually have lots of bags), causing passengers to be bumped for weight or their bags will be sent on later. Which will resulting in lots of lost bags when they arrive at thier overseas locations!

So, bumping passengers or losing bags in far away destinations. Both are bad news for Delta.

It just doesn't make sense to put RJs vs A320. Which would you ride on? But then, we are talking about Delta management, right!

Just my opinion.....
