Was on the crew bus a couple days ago and heard two instructor pilots from ATL saying there might be flights to Ireland on the 737-700. They are typing all first officers in training right now and going to type all remaining FO's as they come in for training at some point in the future. They will be looking to have three pilots on these flights as well as down to South America according to what these guys were saying. Just curious if anybody else has heard any of the same rumours?

I heard that Delta lost $6.4 BILLION dollars in the first 3 months of '08. Makes it sound like they aren't exactly in the position to be in any sort of expansion mode.

And how much of that loss was a goodwill write-down (paper loss)? Try $6.15 billion of it. The rest was due to high fuel costs and most airlines have the same issue.

Given that you spend so much time at your desk, perhaps you should crack open an Accounting 101 book while your at it...

In the words of Steve Martin....EXXXXCUUUUUSSSE ME. Sorry, congrats on your $275 million loss. I guess the world is your oyster. I don't see why you shouldn't expand. We all should be so lucky as to work at a company that post such wonderful quarterly results. Once again, you are the envy of the industry....if you industry is the business of having a bunch of self rightious a-holes who act like massive losses are no big deal.

I can't wait to see what you blame your second quarter losses on.

Ed also clarified questions about Wall Street support, our preparation for higher fuel prices, and a $6.1 billion goodwill balance reported in our quarterly results.
“This was pure book-keeping,” he said. “It has no effect on cash and is not a reflection on the company’s operational performance.” It was ‘fresh start’ accounting that included all of our assets and liabilities and their market value. “Given that our valuation of the company was approximately $10 billion, that led to a very large goodwill value. Since that time, oil prices have doubled, which has reduced our stock price and company valuation. Our investors understood this was purely accounting and in fact did not ask a single question on our earnings call Wednesday. Unfortunately, some of the press (and Tanker Clown who continuously has no clue and cant stand his miserable position in life) are not as educated and did not understand that it was purely a bookkeeping matter.”

This question is pure curiosity, but does anyone know what a goodwill write-down actually is or what it actually accomplishes? Is it just to help the merger? Does it screw any of the investors, partners, or vendors that do business with Delta?

So why do all your post seem to target DAL as the root of all evil? From you avatar you are just a mil puke - you have no dog in DAL's fight. Move on or get over it.

Too bad my mortgage company won't let me do a "good will" write down of my mortgage. I'd be getting creative with the books too if I were Delta. The facts are that Delta lost a TON of money (again) and has a bleak outlook.

Haven't you figured it out yet.....His birth is the result of one night of boozing in Atlanta between some heffer flght attendant and a homeless guy. Of course, having nothing for him they gave him up, where he was raised and sent off to boarding school, then the military, where he now proudly represents our nation serving coffee and doughnuts to our fearless troops and making very important fax copies!

If you had a tragic life like his, could you?
After all, take a look at his website!

Yeah, but all you have to do is fix the flat tire, and you can move your home into any mobile trailer park you want, and now it can be called, transportation!

Dude, you'll be happy to live in a trailer park when you get your next pay cut. When you lose $6.4 BILLION per quarter, paycuts are the only thing to preclude liquidation.

Ok... so this is obviously not Tanker Clown, as this guy apparently actually flies an airplane for a paycheck. Having said that, will some self-respecting FedEx pilot please PLEASE follow this guy to the parking lot, follow him home, and then give him a world class beat-down up against his "love me wall".

Oh yeah, and Tanker Clown....
"Pencils are good".. A.W. Faber

Your signature/quote sucks. It reeks of unoriginal thought, much like yourself.

Too bad that if you guys do this a couple more times that you will liquidate and be working a Starbucks as a full time job. Man....from top of the heap to a far second to SWA to a far second to an AF pilot....to jobless..........good luck.

Back on the course of the thread after the usual idiots (circle, diagonal, diagonal, LNAV engaged...)

I haven't heard that specific rumor, although I have heard on numerous occassions how the ops guys are really looking forward to the flexibility of the -700's. They apparently can fill almost any gap we have as far as stage length, field performance, and good hauling capability with efficiency.

I believe Tanker Clown's primary issue is that he doesn't understand the main problem with humping the leg of a single carrier or goal in aviation (in his case, WN): this industry is completely cyclical.

Today's top dog is tommorrow's roadkill- sometimes to a greater extent than another. This is why you don't see 99% of the real WN pilots (SWA F/O has even toned it down), the FedEx pilots and so on (I guess that just leaves UPS) doing the same thing he's doing. Being a professional pilot is respect for others and knowing that it can all be taken away in a heartbeat.

Most aspects of our carreer...outside of appropriately operating our aircraft and trying to make our voices heard...are far out of our hands.

I heard that rumor last year when I was in 737 training. BOS-SNN in 737-700.

Heck, spome of the transcons out of JFK are higher block than SNN.

If the AF came up $6.4 BILLION short....people would go to jail. At Delta, they get bonuses.

How funny. You know very well that the Air Force goes in and builds the O club, golf course, pool and every other recreational facility first then when they run out of money they run back to congress for more. When congress says no then the Air Force boys point out that they haven't built the damn runway yet. Poof more money.

On the serious side, military organizations run short of money all the time and most of the time congress authorizes more and no one ever goes to jail. I had the unfortunate opportunity to be the supply and property book officer for numerous army units as an additional duty.

Goggles:
There was talk about using the 737-800 back in 2000-2001 for that particular route. Don't know what ever happened to it, but it wouldn't surprise me about the -700 rumor!

Ever see I Dream of Genie?

Cross your arms, nod your head and blink. Opps there goes a couple of Billion of goodwill.

When NWA and Delta emerged from bankruptcy they had to determine a value for their Company. Much of the value was in the form of "goodwill" based on assumptions regarding future performance. With oil prices where they are at, the market does not have much optimisim for our future and has sold the stock. The write down of goodwill is the same as the write up.

Not that it is completely intangible. I live in a popular community. You might say a couple years ago the "goodwill" because of market assumptions about my home were $40,000 more than the "goodwill" that is out there now for homes like mine. It reflects and intangible aspect of the market, but helps get the books in line for the merger since equity is going to get swapped.

Value is determined when there is a seller and a buyer who reach an agreement.

Tankerclown, you just lost $200 million of goodwill valuation in my books. By your logic, that means you owe me. Pay up!

I used to ride the Continental 737 jumpseat quite a bit when I was working at Continental Express and this same topic came up from time to time, so CAL has been looking at the same thing too, it appears.

From what I was told by the crew (I have no 737 experience), one issue concerned the westbound leg. The airplane has no problem going there, but might not have the legs to make it back with winds and alternates. The flight would be dispatched with a redispatch point, at which time the crew, based on FOB, would continue to EWR or divert to somewhere in Canada for fuel. I don't know if they're still considering this idea of if they decided it wasn't feasible.

I don't know if that was based on the -800 or if the -700 has longer legs.
