Delta CFO Says Airline's Eyes on Asia
Wednesday May 9, 10:28 am ET
By Harry R. Weber, AP Business Writer Delta Chief Financial Officer Talks Up International Expansion

ATLANTA (AP) -- Delta Air Lines Inc. will cut domestic capacity over the next several years as it focuses more attention on expanding its international service, and it has its eyes set on Asia, Chief Financial Officer Ed Bastian said Wednesday.

Bastian said at a New York investor conference that the majority of the Atlanta-based airline's international growth will be in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Delta, the third-largest carrier in the U.S., has long sought to gain a foothold in China. It is banking on an "open skies" agreement being put in place to allow it to fly there.
"We are going to be expanding services to Asia," Bastian said.
He said the majority of the airline's growth in other parts of the world will be "self-funded" by redeploying assets from the domestic side to the international side.
"When I talk about growth, we are going to be doing it in a disciplined manner," Bastian said.

New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport is a key domestic gateway for Delta's international service. Delta has had some infrastructure problems at the airport in recent years, and it has been seeking a solution.
Bastian told investors at the Bear Stearns 2007 Global Transportation Conference that "New York is critical to our strategy going forward."
No decisions have been made about how much further investment the airline will make in retooling its operations at JFK, Bastian said.
Responding to news reports that Delta is reviving plans to spend as much as $1 billion at JFK, Bastian said flatly, "We have not made any decisions or announcements regarding a $1 billion investment in facilities at JFK."
He added, "We've been very clear we need to find a solution."

Bastian reiterated Delta's plans, now that it is out of bankruptcy, to consider selling subsidiary Comair, a regional carrier based in Erlanger, Ky., that provides connecting service for Delta.
"Comair is something we're going to be looking at," Bastian said.
Also in the context of possible asset sales, Bastian mentioned a staffing business that Delta operates. Spokeswoman Betsy Talton said later that Bastian was likely referring to Delta Global Services, which provides temporary staffing to different parts of the airline's business.
On the business side, Bastian said the future prospects for Delta, which emerged from Chapter 11 on April 30 after a 19 1/2-month restructuring, are bright.

"We're ready for takeoff," Bastian said. "We anticipate getting this company back to the top of the charts."
Delta shares rose 49 cents, or 2.5 percent, to $20.12 in morning trading.

Well, we may attempt that routing again, and then again maybe we won't. They are looking at a few cities from LA, including SYD and possibly PVG (Shanghai), Singapore, maybe Hong Kong again. Things will grow there regardless. Tell your friend welcome back.

Is this where Delta wants to throw the B763s on to 11-12 hour trips along with TLV-JFK? Into the most competive market in the pacific? The winds will be right in your face in the winter. Good luck carrying good cargo that really pays. Also, I like my Singapore stews so I will pass on the B767 action to NRT. By the way, NRT will have the short runway extended by 2000ft from current 7000ft in 2009, so once that is done, there may be good opportunities for growth, particularly for carriers with B787s coming online about the same time.

ISRAir currently flies 763s on TLV to JFK, so others can do it. If you have a good product, the people will come, and with good feed at JFK, they will fill the flights. They may also have the choice of flying a DL 777 from ATL if they are coming from the West Coast-----via ATL or JFK will give them the choice of planes.

As far as 767s to NRT from LA, I don't think that will be the case, but we don't know yet. Yes, the Singapore stews are cute, and if you want to go that route, go ahead. And, rumor has it that we have already ordered through a lessor some 787s, with some maybe coming in late 08 or early 09. Maybe there will be some more NRT opportunities for us too.
