LE BOURGET (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines Inc. is poised to start replacement of its widebody fleet, and will likely decide by the end of the year whether to go with Boeing Co.'s popular 787 Dreamliner or the Airbus A350 XWB, a top Delta executive said at the Paris Air Show.
"We do need to make a decision really by the end of this year on the 767 replacement, because we will need to start taking those in 2013-2014," said Jim Whitehurst, Delta's chief operating officer, in an interview at the Paris Air Show.
Delta, which emerged from a spell in bankruptcy earlier this year, is still weighing up the competing planes, according to Whitehurst.
"We have been waiting until the numbers are fully firmed up (on the A350)," he said. "We will be assessing the 787 versus the A350 as we go forward this year."
The Wall Street Journal Online reported earlier on Tuesday that Delta is set to order as many as 125 Boeing 787s this year, worth about $20 billion at list prices.
A spokesman for Boeing, reached at the Paris Air Show, said the company does not comment on speculation about future orders.

I thought DAL was a "boeing only" airline? Seriously, didn't delta sign some statement that they only intend to buy boeing a few years back...?

The 350 is in there just to keep the boeing price down. I'll dye my hair pink and pierce my nipples the day Delta orders the A350.

Then you'll look just like those cactus pilots!
Seriously though, you're correct, DL isn't going airbus.....Its just to keep Boeing's price down.

Riiiiight......Boeing is sold out to 2012 and people are lining up to get 'em while they're hot. Boeing is now commanding full retail. DAL is in no position to negotiate a lower price, that's for certain. In fact, Boeing might just raise the price. This happens in negotiations when one party knows the other has a weak position and is desperate (i.e., DAL). You says DAL isn't desperate? They have publically stated that their entire strategy for success going forward is to buy newer, longer range and more fuel efficient aircraft. BA knows there is no chance in heck that DAL will buy the Airbus product.
In fact, I'll bet the head of Boeing commercial aircraft sales called Whitehurst and said, "Ol Jimmy boy, you opening your yapper trying to squeeze my cajones in public just increased the price." Why would BA give a discount on the best selling commercial aircraft in history when they don't have to?

Just curious....how old are FedEx's A300's. They are still flying I believe.

Mid-late 90's along with the brand new ones they've still been getting the last several years I think. The A310's are a lot of second hand mid 80's models. The American buses range from 1987ish to 1993ish

Go ask Gen Lee, Delta tells Boeing what to do, because Delta is THE BEST customer to Boeing. Delta also thinks it can cut through the 500 plus aircraft orders just in time with Continental and Northwest, those guys have their orders in since 2005, and I am sure AA would tell you the same. I think it will be Boeing for Delta but it will be interesting to see where in the list the first delivery would end up. They can always go knock on leasing companies that have available slots but Jonjuan has a point.

Who wants to fly the same airplane for 30 years?????? If you do that, you would be flying an ancient piece of junk!!!!!!!

That's the idiot Boeing argument "it last for 30 years" but nobody wants to be on near a plane that old, look at NWA DC-9's .

Maybe they are trying to negotiate a lower price for the 787.

If DAL orders A350's, I"ll shave my head and run through the terminal in ATL butt arse naked!!!

My guess is Boeing told Delta to create some chatter about the 350 so that when they ineviatebly buy the 787 Airbus will have less ground to stand on when they try to sue/grieve it on the world trade market.

Although who knows, maybe AB is so desperate they will give Delta a price they can't refuse, but I doubt it. My money (and concurrent pink hair nipple ring wager) is on Boeing for this one.

I'll take a 30 year piece of junk that climbs and goes fast any time over Airbus multi-million dollar hedge trimmer. Enjoy sitting at the gate for Mx.
