Do pilots have to set the torque manually for take off?

Seems to me that back in the early days you could bug the NTO torque and the ECU would keep you from an exceedence. I've seen the steam gauge with the bug, but I thought system was permently MEL'd. Long time ago....

T8

200s have the bugs. They move based on ECU selection: TOP, MCL, MCR. Poor man's FADEC, I guess.

Imagine that. We actually have to move levers and controls without pushing a bunch of buttons and having a computer do it for us.

Cave men....geez!

Here's another question, I noticed when you taxi into position your flight spoilers are deployed. Is that something that's automatic? As soon as you begin your roll they retract.

On the 100, the spoilers stand up (when selected to flight position) and they close based off of power level position (or when placed in taxi position for stowage). Not sure about the other models.

Another question: What about the "dash" numbers? What's the difference between, -311 and a -314 and a -315 etc. ?

Sounds like you're working waaaaay too hard for your money. I like being able to just flip a couple of switches and then getting right back to my comic book.

well, we always have the option to punch buttons if we don't actually feel like flying so it's all good. anyway, the dash 8 is like the space shuttle compared to the saab 340 i see in your profile. well, maybe not, but it least it has rnav and an apu. (also, i've never flown a saab but from sitting in the back it seems like there is no yaw damper in that thing either.)

As far as the different numbers (311, etc.), there a ton of mods on the dash, so it would be tough to narrow down the differences between them.

Thanks! We were holding short in PHL the other day and I thought that was an odd time to check the spoilers.

No need to correct yourself about the space shuttle comment, we get that all the time from passengers who like to compare their VW buses to the Saab (Unfortunately, they're right!) As for the Yaw Damp thing, I hear you loud and clear. For pete's sake, look at how much dihedral is in the tail section and check out the size of that dorsal fin! It's slow and ugly, but it burns alot of gas.

The spoilers up when they take the runway is a -100 thing.........the FLT/Taxi switch goes to FLT, all the conditions are met (pwr back, a/c on grnd, etc) so they deploy. Then when you push the power past the microswitch, they retract. You won't see it on -2/300's. It's not a "check", the airplane thinks it just landed. Works fine.....just looks funny from the outside.
