Delta September Traffic Rises 8 Percent

ATLANTA (AP) -- Delta Air Lines Inc., which filed for bankruptcy last month, on Wednesday said September traffic rose 8 percent on heavier international travel and a 4.2 percent increase in capacity. Revenue passenger miles increased to 9.4 billion from 8.7 billion a year ago. A revenue passenger mile equals one paying passenger flown one mile. Domestic traffic expanded 7 percent during the month, while international traffic jumped 10.9 percent.
Available seat miles, or capacity, was 12.86 billion seat miles versus 12.35 billion a year ago. Load factor, or the number of passengers carried as a portion of available seats, grew to 73.1 percent from 70.5 percent.
During the month, the airline flew 8.9 million passengers, up 2.1 percent from a year ago. Delta shares edged up 1 cent to 79 cents on the New York Stock Exchange.
