Delta used to have a nice international operation in PDX, flying MD-11s to Asia, but they folded it up and pulled out in the late '90s. Too bad, as it could be a money maker today.
 
NWA gets quite a bit of feed in PDX via its codeshares with Alaska and Horizon. PDX-NRT has reportedly been a moneymaker since starting a few years ago, and Portland has a lot of business links with Europe as well. NW already flies SEA-AMS so PDX is a natural next step, since KLM already flies SFO-AMS and LAX-AMS.
