What do regional airlines consider a current first class medical? Can you let the first class down grade to a second class if you are not acting as an ATP or do you have to get a new medical every six months?

It probably depends on the company, but typically, I would think you could let it lapse to a 2nd if you were an FO. It used to be this way at Eagle, but now Eagle does not even require a 1st for FOs. If a pilot is entering training for a captain position, though, they must show up on Day 1 of groundschool with a 1st class medical that will not expire during that course of training.

The real reason there's a difference between the 1st and 2nd class medical is.......... You have made the cardiolgist $50.00 richer for about 30 seconds worth of study/work. Ya got to love it. Where do I sign up for that kind of dough. Sceptical of everything except the physics of flying.

Current first class medical means just that... CURRENT, as in, you've gotten the medical within the last 6 months. Many an applicant have been dismissed from their interviews at various places because of this, even though they were not acting as PIC at their current company. Do yourself a huge favor and get the 1st class a week or so before the interview.
