To those of you who know the difference, could you explain it to me? I know what the CRJ200, 700, and 900 are, but what are the 705's or the 70?'s. I've seen these aircraft referred to, but don't know the differences.
It's my understanding that the "705" is actually a "900" series, configured in two classes, and seats 75. The "70" is actually a "700" series, but since it seats 70 people, some people just call it a CRJ-70. Dats what I think.
The specifics can be found on Bombardier's website: Bombardier.com
But basically,
701--Typical 70-seat CRJ as used by Comair/ASA/Eagle etc
705--A 900-series CRJ configured to seat 74? (I think)
900--90-seat CRJ Like Mesa has for AmWest
So, the only difference between a 705 and 900 (as far as I know) is the number of seats. Dimentions, powerplant, etc... are the same.
The CRJ 705 was concieved as a "scope buster" much the same as the CRJ 440 or ERJ 140. Getting a 705 airframe on the property will conform to some carriers current scope requirements but leaves the option of STCing additional seats in the future. The 700 and 900 have nearly the same operating costs so why not get the more flexable airframe?
