I had pretty lousy credit when I applied (mostly due to student loans) I didn't seem to effect my application.

I doubt they would deny you a position based on a persons debt load. It might be a hit if you have serious delinquencies and have failed to try to rectify (or even address) the situation with creditors and instead just let it go to the point that the creditor charges off the debt.

Why not take charge and get pro-active instead of being reactive. Despite what you may have heard, there are no "overnight fixes" and dont even consider spending money on a 'credit repair' company that promises to get you A+ credit, that is simply a ripoff and/or a scam and there is nothing they can do that you can not do for free. So why not take the steps necessary to improve your own credit rating. It is not hard, just requires some planning and detail work on your part. More info can be found at: http://www.creditinfocenter.com - check out there discussion forums - good place to get answers to most all of your questions on how to imrpove your credit rating as well as deal with creditors, collection agencies and credit reporting agencies (the axis of evil report :D ). Also http://consumers.creditnet.com/straighttalk/board/ has a good FAQ and a number of sample letters that you can use to send to various entities to get you on your way to better credit.

Finally, visit http://www.daveramsey.com

Good guy, but some might consider him a bit 'fanatical' with the way he dispenses admonishment and advice simultaneously but he has some straight forward principles and really good advice on how to manage your finances that allow you to attack and eliminate debt in a concise and methodical manner.

www.creditnet.com is full of useful information. Everything from the credit basics to bankruptcy is discussed. You will be amazed at how little people know about credit. I personally had horrible credit and by taking some info from that board, within a year, I was able to turn my credit from bad to very good. I recommned visiting the board. Some very good reading.

When I graduated from college I had four airline job offers and about $8,000 of credit card debt. It didn't stop me from getting a job but it sure was tough making $18,000/year and trying to pay off all those credit cards.

Fortunatly, my parents live where I'm based so I moved home with them to save money. Yeah, it sucks but my credit cards are being reduced significantly. I can't wait to have them all paid off and move out. Do whatever you can to get rid of the debt, it'll make your life a lot easier.

I went to one of those Dave Ramsey seminars and it was really good. He has a couple books too that are good. You obviously don't have to follow all of his advice but even if you follow a couple of his ideas it'll help.

Good Luck!
