I played football in high school and college [very limited career] and, along with people in the military, I found many attitudes and self images to be of a macho type; kick ass and get things done type of mentality. Since much of the male ego is phalic centered it is a question how many could adjust to such a radical change in a self image.

My father took a machine gun round through the groin during WWII. He had to face the possibility of being less than what he wanted to be [or at least something different than he expected]. I have the sense he tried to bring me up to considered how fast and permanent life dreams and conditions can change.
