Crashed Plane Found in Southwest Nebraska
Wreckage of a small plane was discovered Thursday in southwest Nebraska. Initial reports said three people died.
The crash was spotted by a utility worker shortly before 10 a.m. in a field about one mile south of the Millard Airport. Dense fog blanketed the area at the time.
Federal Aviation Administration officials said three people were on board the Piper 28, a single-engine airplane, and there were no survivors.
It was unclear when the plane crash occurred, said Don Hughes, manager of the FAA's Omaha terminal approach control.
"If the pilot never talked to anybody, and never called us on radar or anything, we would have no idea" what happened, Hughes said.
Millard is an uncontrolled airport, and is not equipped for instrument approaches, Hughes said.
Debris was scattered across a grassy field near La Vista. Trees line the field's perimeter.
Omaha, Sarpy County and La Vista emergency crews were on the scene and an investigation by federal authorities was expected.
