Opinons please - do you mention this in your cover letter or simply state your current position and leave out the future furlough info?

That depends on where you are applying. It can work to your advantage or disadvantage. I personally have always explained what my current situation was when I was applying for jobs. I think it helps you get interviews at least, especially when you are about to lose your job or don't have one.
If you are applying to a corporate company, you might want to stress that you want to be with them long term and do not plan on going back if recalled.
