I have a trip to San Jose, Costa Rica after the first of the year. Anyone got any info on what to do down there for 6 days? any info on resturants and activities would be helpful. The boss sais we are staying at some resort towards the coast, so I guess that is taken care of.

Are the locals cool with Americans and the U.S. $$?

Go to the Blue Marlin casino. Be careful downtown at night..lots of crime. There is a valcano to see close by, and forest tour with tree swings. been a long time for me, so thats all I can remember- oh yeah, nice beaches.

All I can say is another pilot and myself had a great time in C.R. We did a 12 hour Eco-Tour that cost $80. They picked up at the hotel, drove to one of the volcano's where we had breakfast and awesome CR coffee. From there, we drove to the rainforest where we walked a 3 mile trail. Saw around 4 or 5 waterfalls there amongst other things, and then went to a river tour. The boat let us view monkeys, snakes, crocs, and all kinds of stuff. I had a blast! As the other poster said, be careful of downtown. We ventured there during the day and didn't have problems, but our local driver told us its pretty tough if they know you're Gringo. Kinda hard to hide that fact!

Anyway, ask your concierge about the tours ~ I promise you won't regret it. Just make sure you bring a good quality digital camera.

American $ is okay, but I exchanged at the hotel for no charge...just make sure to spend it! Restaurants are okay...you have to really go off the beaten path to find the true local stuff. There's actually Hooters and Outback near where we stayed. Try to get a local driver, the taxi's are okay, but play the "No speaky English" when it works for them.

Enjoy.

San Jose, CR

Greetings,

You'll really enjoy CR. I was there last March and had a GREAT time. San Jose is a big city with big city issues but overall I found the people throughout the entire country to be very happy and friendly towards Americans. Like just about any big city, watch out for yourself at night and be extra mindful of bus stations, etc. Try to get off the beaten path and you'll get a real taste (figuratively and literally) of the country. I found the food to be excellent and the local beer is cheaper than bottled water and it actually tastes good (bonus!). Have fun and remember to take a quality camera...you'll want evidence of the amazing things you see!

PS-Some of the costal areas have questionable water sources (Limon is one I think). Resorts should be fine but check a quality guide book ( I like Rough Guides) to be on the safe side. Have fun!

We were there last week. The local currency is Colones but USD's are the currency of choice. You will get Colones back as change, though.

People are really nice--they appreciate you trying to speak Spanish however poorly you do it.

We were in Papagayao near Liberia on the West coast. Haven't done San Jose. TC

The best rafting I have ever done was the Pacaure River in Costa Rica. Use this company http://www.riostropicales.com/english.htm

We did the 2-day for $250 per person. They pick you up in San Jose, drive you 3 hours to and from the river, feed you 5 times (all great food), 2 half days of rafting, zip line tour, hike through the jungle. Half way down the river you sleep in these tree house cabins with running water and electricity. Really an amazing time.

There are some other companies that offer similar 2-day trips, but you get to sleep in tents and I'm not sure what the food is like.

Hey

If you go to west towards puntarenas or waco area! be carefully roads are bad and there is lots of whores on the streets!

Airport is good and people are very nice!

Waco area is good for surfing and there is also Marriot resort which is pretty nice!

you can easily survice with US dollars you dont need to change money! And also 90% people speaks english! San Jose has multiple US airlines flying daily!
