I'm currently on the market for a lightweight headset that could be used for jets.

The airplane we fly is equipped with headsets, but I'm now finding myself needing a "personal" set more and more (flying with other people, etc.)

But I have to admit I know nothing about lightweight headsets, and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. I'm not looking to spend a lot of money (preferrably less then $300) since I probably won't be using it that frequently.

The Telex Airman 750 headset seems to have mentioned a lot.

Any recommendations or help would be greatly appreciated.

Is the $599 headset the only one they have available? It's a bit outside of my price range.

And also, do you use this type of headset?

Yeah, I use the dual ear headset (with the ATC mic boom). I know another member on here, Diesel, uses the same one. He flies jets (I believe) while I put around in pistons right now. I love them. They're not like ANR in the sense where it's like a surreal silence. You still hear background noises, but the loud and bad frequencies are totally cut out. Plus, it's pretty nice not having ear cups and a head band squeezing your head all day. I believe they have 46db reduction if you mold the ear buds to your ear.

Thanks for all the helpful information. Just one thing you forgot to answer - is that one headset for $599 the only one they got? I took a good look thru their website and couldn't find anything else.

On there they show that they've got the original headset $495.00 (no boom mic, just a mic in one ear bud and a speaker in the other). That's the only other one that I know of. Give em a call...they're nice people. Ask if they have any discounts for being a professional pilot (can you believe they wouldn't give me the same discount cause I'm just a lowly CFI?).

If it were me, and my flightdeck were quiet, I'd stick with the Telex. While ANRs are great, IMHO, after a prolonged period they become hot and cumbersome. I find them uncomfortable also when wearing sun glasses. The 750s are light, comfortable, stow easily onboard or in your bag.

750's. No muss, no fuss, no pain. If you wind up in a noisy ac, just take a couple of those squeezy ear plugs and use them under the 750s.

Don't forget used

Don't discount used headsets. I have purchased fine headsets, all used for way less than new retail prices. All work great. I actually bought my Sennheisers from Flight Info's For Sale forum.

As far as what works good in jets.....depends on what kind of aircraft. If the noise level is relatively low, you can get away with ANR only. If not I would recommend an ANR with passive.

The headset which I provide the link to above works well in the Beechjet 400A, however, when I fly the MU-300 or the BE-400, I use my David Clark ANR's.

May I also suggest Headsets Inc. I did this conversion nearly 2 years ago, and am very pleased. If you have a non ANR headset which you are fond of, this is a good option to add ANR to it.

I prefer the telex 750SS. The SS stands for single sided. Having only one ear covered alows cockpit conversation with out the intercom. It is also lighter weight and just as durable. You can find them on line in the $220.00 price range.
I have owned numerous sets and this is the best. I've used it in the 500 series Citations, The Citation X and the Airbus320.
Let me know if you need help finding it on line

PLEASE DO NOT get the Panther Mk1 edition headset (uses mandible vibration to create an audible signal). It sounds like barely audible garbage to the other pilot you're flying with...maybe it was just this guys unit, but imagine listening to someone yell into a well that had a combination of cotton and bolts in their mouth. For 4 days straight.
Hopefully the Mk2 unit with the tiny boom mic works much better. Anyways, most people seem to use Telex 750/850s, Plantronics in-ear units, or Sennheisers.
