What is the best way to go about picking up contract Citation work? I just got typed in a C-500 and would like to be able to get some extra work on the side either as PIC or SIC.
maybe check with some of the Single pilot waiver operators. I fly a 550 on a sp waiver but pick up contract F/O's for the real long days, international stuff (ICAO in general, doesn't recognize the waiver) or places like NY on real crap weather days.
Some 135 operators will keep a couple of guys on the certificate for fill ins, but this is normally only if you have a buddy there and they use inhouse training. (I know a med flight company that does this and they in house all their 135 F/O's) But like I said it normally involves a close friend in the company.
I pick up some corp flying from other departments on the field and know an aircraft dealer that I pick up some work from time to time delivering aircraft to their new home, while they wait on their pilots to get trained.
You should concentrate on SIC, If your profile is current, it is doubtful that you will find any contract work as Capt. with your total time. If you can find some, go for it, but the insurance companies probably won't take 2100 tt for a contract capt. Just to keep our insurance reasonable, I have to keep our open pilot time at 4000 tt and 1000 jet with 50 in type. If you are the full time pilot and the company can take the huge hit for the first year or so on insurance until you get time in type, you can get a PIC job with less.
Insurance really drives the market. You would think that SP operations would scare the ins. companies but with us it only adds about $7000 to the premium, and there is no way to hire a full time F/O for much less than $25,000. (I know some stooge will pay us to fly right seat or do it for free.........but not in my cockpit!)
I have had other guys tell me they cannot get SP insurance for corporate ops, so maybe the ex 121 Captain thing has the companies fooled or something. I do not know how much time the pilots being denied SP ops have so I cannot really gauge how hard it really is. Suffice it to say we have no problems with coverage, and my contract F/O's are there for when I don't feel warm and fuzzy about SP ops on a 14 hour duty day or 8 hours of hard time, in 200 and 1/2 weather.
