HOUSTON (AP) -- Continental Airlines Inc. said Tuesday it is recalling the first pilots among a group that was furloughed in 2008. The carrier expects to rehire the rest within a year.
The company said it is also bringing back 111 pilots who took voluntary leave or other measures designed to limit the number of furloughs in 2008 and 2009.
"We see this as an encouraging sign and one of the first steps in recalling all of our 147 pilots currently on furlough in a year," Continental spokeswoman Julie King said.
King said the moves were made possible because Houston-based Continental will be adding two new Boeing 777 aircraft this fall, increasing its international flights from Guam, and replacing pilots who are retiring.
Jay Pierce, chairman of the Continental chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association, said his group was pleased with the recalls.
Pierce said that with new aircraft, an improving economy and expectations for more passenger travel during the summer, "the return of our furloughed pilots -- all of them -- is needed to maintain the level of service that Continental is known for."

Always better to be back on property and part of the SLI than on the street. Even if your get furloughed as a result of the merger.

Most likely they will be bunched in with the furloughed UAL pilots in your SLI, since they were furloughed when the merger was announced. With the DL/NWA merger, 100 guys hired after the announcement were all placed at the bottom of the list by the arbitrators, all by themselves.

Bye Bye--General Lee

I might have to agree with the generalities of Mr. Lee.

Still good news though. Lets not piss on the campfire.

This gives the CAL negotiating committee a lot more leverage however when it comes to arguing the CAL furloughees career expecations. How can you argue that your furloughed pilots (UAL) have career expectations at all compared to CAL furloughed guys when the CAL guys are back on property. No, I am sure that we will not be treated as active pilots during the SLI, however we should have a much better place on the list if we are all back on property before the integration is complete.

Career Expectations....the biggest self-delusion an airline pilot can dream of.....
