In each new hire class I assume they fill slots according to age? Oldest gets first choice and down the line from there? Thanks

So, what is the reasoning behind limiting the ability to 'move down' in status?

IE....737 CA to a 777 FO.
 
Most companies would prefer to seatlock all FO's to reduce training costs. However, not allowing a pilot to bid to higher paying equipment sort of flies in the face of the whole seniority process. This is a fairly typical compromise in most contracts.
