Continental Airlines to Launch Seasonal Nonstop Cleveland-Paris Flights; Through Service to Shanghai Pending DOT ApprovalOhio Senators DeWine and Voinovich, Ohio Congressmen Regula, LaTourette and
Hobson and Cleveland Mayor Jackson Strongly Support the New Service
CLEVELAND, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL) today announced plans to launch the first-ever nonstop service between Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport, beginning in 2008.
Provides convenient worldwide connectionsThe new service, which will be open for sale in the summer of 2007 and will initially be seasonal, complements Continental's existing international service between Cleveland Hopkins and London Gatwick, England; Cancun, Mexico; Montreal and Toronto, Canada; and Nassau, Bahamas.
The Cleveland to Paris route is especially attractive as it allows Continental to enhance its participation in the SkyTeam global airline alliance. The new service will provide convenient onward connections to points throughout Europe, Asia and Africa via a Paris hub, operated by Continental's SkyTeam partner Air France. Passenger traffic will be strengthened by having hubs at both ends of the route.
New through flight service between Cleveland and Shanghai
In addition, Continental announced that it intends to provide through flight service between Cleveland Hopkins and Shanghai, China, beginning March 25, 2007, pending Department of Transportation (DOT) approval. The through flight number service will provide convenient air service between the growing region of northern Ohio and China's center for finance and trade via Continental's New York area hub at Newark Liberty International Airport. Continental has applied to the DOT to operate the first-ever nonstop New York/Newark to Shanghai service and the only nonstop Shanghai service from the entire Northeast region of the U.S.
Expanded regional airline serviceAlso in February 2007, Continental Airlines will begin to introduce 16 modern 37-passenger Bombardier Q-200 cabin class aircraft for its Continental Connection flights operated by CommutAir at its Cleveland hub. These aircraft will replace the 19-seat Beechcraft 1900 aircraft currently in service. The transition of aircraft is expected to be completed in the spring of 2008.
Ohio elected officials instrumental to new serviceContinental Airlines and the elected U.S. senators and congressmen who represent Ohio's interest in Washington, D.C., with officials from the state of Ohio, the city of Cleveland and Hopkins International, will work together to bring this new service to Cleveland.
"Today we thank Continental Airlines for responding to our request asking the airline to seriously consider expanding its operations at Hopkins International," U.S. Senator Mike DeWine said. "Cleveland is home to 11 Fortune 1000 companies, and international flights linking these companies to places like France, Europe and China are crucial for our local businesses to succeed in today's global marketplace. As international air service grows, so do our economy and businesses, and that translates to jobs."
Ohio is home to 60 Fortune 1000 companies, the state ranks fifth in the country for Fortune 500 company headquarters, and Forbes magazine recognizes 34 Ohio companies in its annual ranking of the 2000 largest corporations in the world.
"Senators Mike DeWine and George Voinovich, Congressmen Ralph Regula, Steve LaTourette and Dave Hobson, and Mayor Frank Jackson continue to demonstrate their support for Continental and my 43,000 co-workers," said Jeff Smisek, president of Continental Airlines. "Over the last 10 years we have made significant investments in our infrastructure to support continued international growth. Cleveland will be the latest Continental hub to see those benefits."
Continental employs over 3,000 co-workers in Ohio, flies to five cities across the state and operates a hub at Cleveland Hopkins which connects Cleveland to 71 destinations with over 200 daily departures. Continental has invested over $150 million in new facilities at Cleveland. In December 2005, Continental signed a ten-year lease extension with Hopkins International Airport.
"This is great news for Hopkins International Airport and industries that are linked to air service growth," Senator Voinovich said. "Continental's new service to France, Europe and other international destinations will increase economic development opportunities in the region as well as provide a direct link between northeastern Ohio and the international community. This will boost travel, tourism, and business and cultural opportunities. I'm happy to work with Continental to make this happen."
The European market accounts for $6 billion of Ohio's overall international exports with France being the third largest European export market within Europe.
"The future of Cleveland and the region hinges on our ability to compete nationally and internationally in today's global economy. Continental's new international service to Paris and Shanghai will give us access to the largest emerging economy in the world and help local businesses continue to grow," said Mayor Frank G. Jackson, Cleveland. "Thanks to all who made this new service possible."
"Continental has answered our request to link Cleveland with France using what will prove to be economically viable Boeing 757 service," said Congressman Regula. "Also, the through flight numbers between Cleveland and Shanghai will put Cleveland on the map and give the city and region an additional opportunity to promote themselves across China and the greater Asian region."
"Anytime Continental is able to expand its presence at Hopkins, it's a great benefit to Cleveland, the regional economy and the state," said Congressman LaTourette. "We want Continental's presence in Cleveland to grow, and the addition of more international flights is just a tremendous benefit for travelers and businesses and helps to solidify the vital importance of Continental to our area."
"I support business growth wherever it occurs in the state of Ohio," said Congressmen Hobson of the 7th Ohio district. "Adding nonstop Paris service and through flight service to Shanghai from Cleveland is a win for all of the residents of Ohio."
Continental Airlines is the world's fifth largest airline. Continental, together with Continental Express and Continental Connection, has more than 3,200 daily departures throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia, serving 154 domestic and 138 international destinations. More than 400 additional points are served via SkyTeam alliance airlines. With more than 43,000 employees, Continental has hubs serving New York, Houston, Cleveland and Guam, and together with Continental Express, carries approximately 61 million passengers per year. Continental consistently earns awards and critical acclaim for both its operation and its corporate culture.
In 2006, Continental Airlines won its sixth J.D. Power and Associates award since 1996. The carrier received the highest rank in customer satisfaction among network carriers in North America in the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Airline Satisfaction Index Survey(SM). For the third consecutive year, FORTUNE magazine named Continental the No. 1 Most Admired Global Airline on its 2006 list of Most Admired Global Companies. Continental was also named the No. 1 airline on the publication's 2006 America's Most Admired airline industry list. Additionally, Continental again won major awards at the OAG Airline of the Year Awards including "Best Airline Based in North America" for the third year in a row, and "Best Executive/Business Class" for the fourth consecutive year. Wow, didn't see that coming... 757 CLE base next?

My guess is they need more than 2 flights a day to call it a base!:) Notice the start date (2008). A lot can happen by then.

The info about 2008 is not about CDG service, that is about turboprops that Commutair will be converting from Beech1900D's to Q200's. They will have it complete by then the (transition) to the other aircraft.

Paris is for next summer.

Current 757 routes from CLE:
LGW,IAH,EWR,LAX,SFO

I know the schedule always changes, but there are no IAH, LAX, or SFO on the 757 (monday, 18th). There is one to LAS though.

You are right, my mistake. Reference 757's through CLE , the Sept. flight schedule has changed many of those flights to 737-800,900's depending on the day. Good info.

Speaking of 737s, does Continental fly 738 or 739 to Europe. I went fishing in Ireland several years ago and there was a Continental 737 in Shannon. I wish Delta would take the 800 or 900s if we get them from BOS to Shannon/Dublin. Enjoy busting you CAL guys balls over the NY thing. Best of luck to you guys.

I could understand if someone from Cleveland wants to go to Paris, but why would an individual from Paris want to come to Cleveland?

To return home. I bet our lowest load factor flight in the history of Continental will be the first CDG-CLE leg. On a bright note, I saw 5 757's on the ground at CLE the other morning. That is a welcome change at a "hub" that used to see only small 737's and tons of ERJ's. Maybe CLE is around to stay for us.

IAHERJ

4 of them probably diverted. ;)

I flew out of CLE back when mainline had a decent presence there in the late 90's and even then a 757 was a rare sight. Normally an Indians charter.

You've got LGW, EWR, LAS, and I think there was a LAX or IAH there as well. You could be right about a diversion or 2. I remember being hired in 98 at Express and seeing an MD-80 on the ramp in CLE and knowing that it was the heavy iron to IAH. Tons of DC-9's and 737-500's at C concourse and us Brasilia's parked "terminal side". Those were the days.
